Northern Nights

Nestled in NorCal’s Redwood expanse sits the boutique music festival that is Northern Nights. Part campers’ picturesque escape, part music aficionados’ river-dance party, and part earth-conscious permie gathering, this festival stands out in its efforts to impact positive change. With non-profits involved in almost all the inner workings of NNMF, it’s clear to see a greater purpose at play. That energy permeates as attendees can be seen picking up random trash and having meaningful conversations. While the fest-MC’s rather disingenuous comment of “at the end of the day, it’s just music” did little to share the message in a well-deserved light, the five-thousand present made it pretty clear that leaving the world a better place is the onus probandi.

One of the fastest rising lyricists in the future beats/bounce scene, GoldLink has been getting major attention this past year. His 2014 mixtape The God Complex was the definitive marker of his skill with flow and social commentary. He blends the two together into energetic and sporadic rap that is no less than impressive. And with a voice as unique as his, it’s hard not to pay attention.

GoldLink – Dance on Me

GoldLink – Bedtime Story

Daniel Goldstein, or Lane 8 only seems to get better with time; we always make it a point to support him whenever he comes around SoCal and we’re never disappointed. With his debut album, Rise, dropping the day the fest begins, we can expect him to play a rather emotional set. And judging from the prime vocal features on the album, we’re hoping for some special guest appearances.

Catch us among the wave of feelings washing over the forest.

Lane 8 – Loving You ft. Lulu James

Lane 8 – Nothing you Can Say ft. Lucy Stone

ODESZA – Bloom (Lane 8 Remix)

If, among the redwoods, you’re looking for music that definitely stands out for the rest, we highly suggest you check out Awesome Tapes from Africa. While the music he plays is an immediately striking blend of afrobeat, electronic, and soul, it is equally interesting that he does it all using cassette tapes. Rare sounds and a rare mixing style means his performance will be quite intriguing. We’re not likely to miss it.

Penny Penny – Dance Khomela

Starship Connection creates funk that is intergalactic planetary. This duo (B.Bravo and Teeko) is well known in many circles as revivalists of West-Coast funk. B-boys love their breaks. Beat mashers praise their jazzy soul. And space cadets explore their dimensional grooves.

Their LA Boiler Room appearance a while back hints at how space-funky their live sets can get. Join us as their smooth sounds transport us through the world of electro-funk.

Straight outta’ Cape Town comes Goldfish. The South African duo produces some of the finest – what I like to refer to as – “Gatsby House” I’ve ever heard. Mixing instruments like the piano, flute, trumpet, stand-up bass, saxophone and others with punchy drums and 64-bit synths, Goldfish has been taking over the festival circuit with their one of a kind live shows. Using turntables, electric drums, and a barrage of live instruments, Goldfish has been able to create something completely unique on stage that is for sure a can’t miss performance at Northern Nights. From flappers to hippies, Goldfish will have everyone doing the Charleston.

Goldfish – Fort Know

Goldfish – Brush Your Hair

Goldfish – Sugar Man (Tribute to Rodriguez)

Goldfish – Moonwalk Away

Monophonics are the new personification of psychedelic soul. Akin to greats like Jimi and James, this quintet tugs at our heart strings with every note. They add quite a bit of funk for some dance-able measures.

Monophonics – My Heart Cries ft. Tiffany Austin

Monophonics – I’d Be Nowhere Today
