CRSSD FEST

It’s often said that the third time’s the charm. But, Goldenvoice and FNGRS CRSSD have proved all it takes is two. Their second ever SD music festival this year blew us out of the water, unsurprisingly. With a deservedly hyped lineup and a fantastic front runner, this pair of concert promoters have etched their names into the proverbial show-stones of San Diego and SoCal.

Just 6 months ago, we were lauding FNGRS CRSSD for bringing forward thinking music and well-structured logistics to the San Diego scene. Early last month, they let us know they were far from done. And earlier today, they let us know that they’re here to claim their title as San Diego’s premier festival for those in the musical know.

Picture this: You are bayside. The weather is everything you could ask for from Southern California. Sunny. A cool breeze. Craft beer in hand. The best live indie and electronic music currently in the scene. Mesmerizing sunsets. Serious question: what more?

CRSSD festival saw it’s inaugural event this month, and it couldn’t have gone any better. The list of everything they did right for those in attendance is nearly endless. They provided the perfect atmosphere for, quite honestly, the best top to bottom lineup we’ve ever seen. This ranged from major stage acts like Chromeo and Empire of the Sun to underground future stars like Lido, Giraffage, and Carmada to deep house and techno legends like Maceo Plex and Damian Lazarus. I still get chills thinking about the range of artists that were available for us.

The pastel, oceanside sunsets and palm tree lines laced the backdrop to some of the more memorable performances of the weekend. I’ll never forget the soothing sounds of Flight Facilities setting the tone for this wonderful atmosphere. It was almost too fitting with the airplanes landing behind mainstage at San Diego airport. The energy of the early crowd for early sets like Lido and Treasure Fingers were electrifying. Starfucker brought “the weird” to the San Diego crowd in a way only they can, and it nearly brought me to tears.

All in all, there was a lot that made this event perfect: Impressively lax entry lines, wide beer & food selection, a water fountain to play and cool down in, and beautiful 21+ people. Yeah. The entire event was 21+, which entirely changed the vibe of the festival in the best way possible. That’s just it, though. The crowd can make or break an event, and this one added to it in a priceless way. Some things to work on included more trashcans as people were a little loose with their disposables and more efficient bathroom locations. That’s literally it. All events, new and old, could learn from what CRSSD festival provided, and we can’t wait for 2016.

Carmada is the combination of Aussie producers Yahtzel and LDRU. Together, their respective styles blend into melodic tropical trap bass house with a down under flavor that can’t really be compared to.

So we won’t try to. All we know is that when they play at the The Palms stage, we’ll be right there in the haze of it all.

We still remember the occasion that was Tensnake’s debut of Glow a year ago. Album single ‘No Relief’ made it into almost every playlist and mix we listened to or curated. The album in general was great for after-hours maxing. Much of his production is, for that matter, well suited for beach-breezy post-parties.

Listening to his growth since tropical disco’s champion ‘Coma Cat’ came out over 5 years ago has been quite the adventure; seeing him at the City Steps stage will bring it all back around for us.

George Maple has a most infectious voice. She’s built a name for herself as the vocalist on various hit tracks like Flume’s ‘Bring You Down’ and Snakehips’ ‘On & On’. As a solo act backed by pristine production, she takes more of a silky smooth trip-hop future-pop foray into sound.

Her breakout single ‘Talk Talk’ garnered much acclaim thanks to her heartbreak lullaby and Flume’s mellowed production. Catch her at the Ocean View Live stage. She’ll also be at SXSW the week after!

The San Diego music scene has the reputation of being considerably fragmented across genres. In the early part of the century, Electronic music gained traction thanks to our buddies at LED and SoundLogik. Still, artists at the forefront of the scene appeared in SD sporadically. FNGRS CRSSD was born in early 2013 with the aims of changing the dynamics of the SoCal music scene. CRSSDFEST is that change.
