Chiefs | Soundcloud

In less than six months, rookie Melbourne producer Chiefs has managed to release a debut EP, some singles, and quite a few remixes including Drake, Robin Thicke, Major Lazer, Paces and most recently Crooked Colours. He draws sonically from Hip Hop, Trap and Jersey Club but still manages to keep it danceable. The R&B samples, heavy bass, and melodic synths come together for a trifecta of bassy goodness. Having been featured on both the first compilation album by Pilerats Records and DIE HIGH Records’ DIEHIGHlights and being championed by the likes of Ta-Ku and Stwo, big things are all but assured.

APEX TOUR

There’s nothing quite like a warehouse party. There’s nothing quite like deep house and minimal techno out of primo speakers. Throw the two together and you’ve got yourself a guaranteed amazing time. Last Friday, APEX and LOT 613 definitely proved this point. We heard complaints of long lines and the like, but we got there at opening so we’ve got no say in that. The vibe once we were inside was perfect; the energy was palpable.

There were 2 rooms as well as an outside patio so there wasn’t ever too large a crowd in one spot. The visuals from Strangeloop were projected on pretty much every surface, which added to the whole underground warehouse rave vibe. That and the whole ending at 4am thing.

We got in for Droog to warm up and then moseyed on over to the Mateo Warehouse for Split Secs – definitely not a disappointment – my “got-to-see” for the night. There was no separator between the DJ booth and the crowd which made it even cooler.

GirlsOnDrugs

UK duo GirlsOnDrugs (Luke Lount & Kat McHugh) have got me all out of sorts. The dark and industrial vibe is driving me deep. There’s a growing space in my head.

The droning bass is reverberating off the walls. Wistful.
The whining synth leaves behind echoed streaks like neon on water.
The yearning vocals promise there’s more.

I feel like I’m shooting through Tron. Destination: anywhere.

Everywhere.

APEX TOUR | Limited Tickets

This Friday, the coveted APEX tour finally comes to Los Angeles! With dates across North America in New York, Vancouver, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, and more, this tour is not playing games. Hitting all the major North American cities. I definitely feel comfortable saying that LA is going to give them a run for their money. With a lineup as stacked as this, you’d be hard pressed to find a competitive lineup on the rest of the tour. Tale Of Us makes their long awaited return. Justin Martin should pretty much feel at home in LA at this point. Joy Orbison…Danny Daze…..BLOND:ISH! To sweeten the deal. Not to mention this party is going to be full on warehouse vibes in DTLA’s LOT 613 (pictured below). This is not a night to be missed, and get your tickets quick!

PillowTalk | Buy Je Ne Sais Quoi

Wolf+Lamb artists PillowTalk believe in sexy-smooth; 2011’s The Come Back exposed me to that. Their recent (and first) LP Je Ne Sais Quoi is a fusion of R&B, disco, house, dance, pop, and techno [D.A.G.!] that has surpassed all my expectations and has taken over our ears here at C+A+D. It’s been nearly 2 months of listening and we’re still finding out why we love it so much.

I like to think it is due to the heart-warming dreaminess in each track. Opener, ‘Our Story’, sets it up perfectly – this album is a soulful sonic dance adventure. The stories may differ, but the feel-good soul is absolute. They’ve put Je Ne Sais Quoi up for your free streaming pleasure on SoundCloud. Show the crew some love and buy it!

While you’re here, check out one of my all-time favourite mixes too.

Addal

I first found out about Alessandro Addea, stage name: Addal, at the end of Coachella Weekend 1. EMOTIONAL #3 provided the perfect net for the oft-dreaded Coachella Blues. I delved deeper into his sound and lost myself in love with the headiness of Waves ft. Neenah and Morning In Love ft. Lisa May.

A few days ago, along came EMOTIONAL #4; hands down one of the best mixes I’ve heard in a while. The seemingly random, yet undeniably appropriate, genre mix of songs (ZHU and Shiba San come out of nowhere) is an attestation to his skill. It will transport you into another dimension right from the get-go. I’m definitely looking forward to a live set.
