Having missed his LIB 2014 appearance for Beats Antique, we’re wont to see Max Cooper this year at Symbiosis. Human was one of our favourite experimental albums of 2014; Cooper’s pioneering of 4D Sound and his striking Emergence live shows further attract us to the wondrous crossroads of music, art, and technology. While we’re unsure whether any of his large installations will make it to Oakdale, we’re certain he’ll play us off into quite the trip.

Aptly named London duo TENDER incite bedroom ardor simply and smoothly. A little dash of dysphoria via lyricism and drawn out synths and the deed is done.

If Gesaffelstein is Dracula then REZZ is Wednesday Adams. From the depths of Niagara Falls, Canada comes this 20 year old producer/DJ with an affinity for the darker side of electronica. Packing morbid synths and punchy kick drums, REZZ has burst onto the dark techno scene with the technical melodic prowess of a seasoned veteran. So far she’s remixed Marilyn Manson and the aforementioned Mike Levy to great effect.

Her original tracks have heavy 303 and garage influences with a more modern tempo and flow. The mixture of booming synths and sweeps add just the right amount of texture and layering to each record. This is especially evident in new EP Insurrection where wobbly fat synth loops and natural snares combine to put you in a head banging daze. Get lost in her rhythms.

Northern Nights

Nestled in NorCal’s Redwood expanse sits the boutique music festival that is Northern Nights. Part campers’ picturesque escape, part music aficionados’ river-dance party, and part earth-conscious permie gathering, this festival stands out in its efforts to impact positive change. With non-profits involved in almost all the inner workings of NNMF, it’s clear to see a greater purpose at play. That energy permeates as attendees can be seen picking up random trash and having meaningful conversations. While the fest-MC’s rather disingenuous comment of “at the end of the day, it’s just music” did little to share the message in a well-deserved light, the five-thousand present made it pretty clear that leaving the world a better place is the onus probandi.

Glasgow’s Tongues and modulated electro-pop go hand in hand. His use of synth, modulated vocals, and catchy rhythms lead to emotional swells that are a step above typical feel-good fare.
