What if the new season of American Horror Story took place in a haunted Studio 54? Well, headlining opening night would be Dolls. Nikki Milovanovic, formerly the lead singer of Canadian synth pop band The Royal Society, moved to London in 2013 to begin her solo career under her new moniker: Dolls. Part new wave, part gothic, all avant-garde Dolls is poised for a killer 2016.

Dolls’ sophomore album, Eat It Up (dropping May 20th), is a combined effort with UK producer Fauxplay and we cannot wait for it to come out in all its synthy goodness.

Part funk, part glitch, part indie, all groovy. Hailing from Oslo, Norway this Scandinavian electronica duo is sure to be one of the more upbeat and memorable performances in the desert. Lemaitre (pronounced lem-my-tray) consists of former classmates Ketil Jansen and Ulrik Denizou Lund and boy do these two know their synths. Fusing traditional instruments and original synth melodies seamlessly, every Lemaitre production is carefully crafted and proportioned perfectly.

The viking duo’s 2016 is already off to a massive start with the release of their EP earlier this year 1749. Sonically, this release has a heavy use of piano and takes a few cues from neo-French touch music in the same vain as Breakbot or SebastiAn. Their live set is not one to miss. See you out there at the Polo Club.

Of all the first families of electronic music: The Brothers Lawrence, The Brothers Macklovitch, and The Brothers Martinez. The most influential and dynamic duo of them all has to be The Brothers Dewaele aka 2manyDJs. For the past 12 years they have been annihilating dance floors across the globe with their eclectic anything goes style. If you looked at a track list you would find Justice next to Journey, Boys Noize next to Blur, or Moby next to Mumbai Science.

An offshoot of the legendary group Soulwax who pioneered many of the grimy synths you hear in electronic music today, 2manydjs brings a lot of the heavy electro synths and style into their own performances. Likely to go down in the Sahara Tent, this set is a must-see. Old school and new school fans rejoice as this may be the most diverse and unique electronic performance of the weekend.

Goose – Synrise (Soulwax Remix)

Paul Chambers – Yeah Techno (Soulwax Remix)

HOLY SHIP

The short: cult-like organized chaos.

The long: What if the first day of college was on a cruise ship with all of your favorite electronic artists and lasted three days? If that’s something that sounds like a swashbuckling good time to you then welcome aboard Holy Ship! With five stages of music and a magical menagerie of a line-up, I would say that Holy Ship! is the closest to perfect medium to consume electronic music.

Tycho – Elsewhere (Sunrise Burning Man 2015)

I had heard murmurs of Burning Man becoming a corporate wasteland where past permacultural ideologies have been watered down by the mainstream. In all honestly I could not have been more mooping wrong. More on that word in a minute. I came back from the desert a better, more perceptive human being who just so happens to have white dust seeping out of every orifice.

Let me make one thing clear: there is absolutely nothing like Burning Man. I quickly learned that simply immersing yourself in their culture could initiate growth in a way only Burning Man can. Check after the jump to see why and the highlights from what made this year’s event so special.

If Gesaffelstein is Dracula then REZZ is Wednesday Adams. From the depths of Niagara Falls, Canada comes this 20 year old producer/DJ with an affinity for the darker side of electronica. Packing morbid synths and punchy kick drums, REZZ has burst onto the dark techno scene with the technical melodic prowess of a seasoned veteran. So far she’s remixed Marilyn Manson and the aforementioned Mike Levy to great effect.

Her original tracks have heavy 303 and garage influences with a more modern tempo and flow. The mixture of booming synths and sweeps add just the right amount of texture and layering to each record. This is especially evident in new EP Insurrection where wobbly fat synth loops and natural snares combine to put you in a head banging daze. Get lost in her rhythms.

Somewhere at the cross section of contemporary dance music and modern Los Angeles cool you’ll find Venessa Michaels. This multitalented artist has hit the scene with her own version of “Date Night House”. She has songs for getting ready, for the ride to the restaurant, and certainly for the nightcap. Fusing elements of future, deep house, r&b and trap, Venessa takes it a step further by supplying her own signature future house style. With the inclusion of guest performers like rapper Tay Jasper and singer Kiana Brown, each track echoes the zeitgeist of today’s electronica while also having mainstream appeal.

The recently released 2090 EP gives us a 4 track sample size of what Venessa can bring to the table. Whether it’s the smooth flow of ‘I Need That’ featuring Tay Jasper or the sexy baseline of ‘Whatcha On’ (definitely influenced by ‘The Whisper Song’), Michaels gives us something for the club, the afterparty, and even the after-after party on the track ‘Sexin’ with my Ex’.
