Let’s not go forgetting that it is The Do LaB’s 10-year anniversary. And they’re definitely bringing the heat both weekends. Among the smattering of class acts at the fest-within-a-fest upon the Polo Fields are Foamo and Rack’N’Ruin as UK powerhouse duo Gorgon City. They play Saturday. Weekend 2 goers, be sure to check out the French Express instead.

With backgrounds in pretty much every electronic genre, Gorgon City makes sweet music that is 1-part Disclosure, 1-part Rudimental, and all-parts uniquely Matt & Kye. Think: deep garage house with addicting bass lines and entrancing vocals. Don’t forget to catch Disclosure’s and Rudimental’s sets over the weekend too!

Wave Race | Do Lab | Tickets

After having an explosive year in 2013, Wave Racer has garnered attention from underground aficionados all around the world. And deservedly so! His unique style and uncanny ability to pump out tunes at will have established his credibility in the bouncy electronic music scene. This thriving part of the underground owes much of its credit to Flume’s dubbed Australian Dance Music. Wave Racer also happens to reside from the land down unda, along with other major influences of the sound. The Do Lab and Mad Decent topped the bill by add Jersey club pioneer Trippy Turtle! This night is going to be a riot, and we have two tickets up for grabs for our readers.

Andre Anjos has been building a name for himself as a remix artist extraordinaire. On top of all the skill he’s built over the years comes an LP that consists solely of his own work. Rife with the sprightly indie-pop instrumental goodness we love, Strangers also packs a tropical vocal punch from some of the biggest acts out there (to name a few: Alex Ebert, Tegan & Sara, and St. Lucia). The great beauty of the internet today is that it allows us to communicate with people around the world like never before. Sure, this is obvious obvious, but it’s changed the game for the possibilities of music. It has created opportunities making it easier for the most unlikely collaborations between artists. There is no better example of this than the musical lovechild of indie sensation James Mercer (The Shins) and hip-hop producer Brian Burton (Danger Mouse). Who would have thought that these two would come together in a way that would so gloriously improve the legacy of these two established artists?

Upon the release of their self-titled debut album, they showed us how organic of concoction these two could create. Mercer’s nostalgic voice and the soulful rhythms of Danger Mouse come together in a way that makes it too easy to get immersed on their sonic canvas. A combination of live instruments and futuristics synths make this project unlike anything I’ve heard before. Sing alongs, orchestral choruses, groovy bass lines, catchy beats…these guys have got it all.

Their followup album After the Disco was released early this year and is looking to be one of the best albums of 2014. I’m calling it now. They have not done much touring yet which leads me to believe they have a lot of surprises and artistic elements prepared for their upcoming shows around LA and at Coachella. Without a doubt, my #1 “Most Excited For” of the festival.

Devonté Hynes, as Blood Orange, belts out soulful coastal pop. You’ll hear tinges of 80’s heartbreak disco ballads in his music too. While they may linger on the side of sorrow, the lyrics combined with flowing instrumentals bring about a special kind of calm. Considering all the guest appearances on Cupid Deluxe, you can be sure to see a party on stage Saturday.

Foster the People | Buy Supermodel

Foster the People’s sophomore release just hit the market. 3 years in the making, Supermodel could have taken the radio-pop ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ route or a more ‘I Would Do Anything for You’ approach. We were both surprised and pleased the trio chose to move towards the latter. Don’t get us wrong, we love the catchy tracks of Torches (‘Best Friend’ will satisfy that), but Supermodel‘s gritty and introspective direction just seemed like a more appropriate path after all this time. See it as a ‘Coming of Age’ if you will.

This album takes on a cohesiveness that requires it to be listened to in full. Cherry-picking tracks doesn’t do it justice or convey the right effect. With its self-reflective start off, Supermodel locks you in by the time you reach ‘Pseudologia Fantastica’. It resurges with the poppy climax of ‘Best Friend’. By ‘Fire Escape’, Mark Foster is all burned out – the respite is welcome (to pre-orders) before the psychedelic trip of ‘Tabloid Super Junkie’. All in all, it looks like we’ll be setting the schedule to enjoy some Foster the People come Coachella Saturday (26/33 days left!).
