This Thursday marks the beginning of our weekly residency at the Commissary Lounge in Costa Mesa. For each week we’ll have one of our writers and DJ Incan Octopus post a mix for the occasion. He’ll be playing every Thursday this month and will be joined by none other than our own Chronic Mncher for the inaugural event. Every night is free. Cherokee can do no wrong. After releasing their brilliant original “Don’t Matter” just last month, the French duo show no signs of slowing down. This new stuff is fun, it’s fresh, it’s disco. Oscillating synths glide through the chromatic scale, transporting us to a far away galaxy of dance and rhythm. If you like a pu pu platter of house and disco, then get ready to chow down.

When I think of the godfathers of modern electronic music, a few names come to mind: Daft Punk, James Murphy, Justice, and the lesser known brothers of Soulwax (AKA 2manyDJs). The amount of influence these guys have had on many of our idols shouldn’t go unmentioned. They’re well respected and highly regarded in the electronic music community by many, but aren’t nearly as recognized as they should be. When taking time out of their studio in Belgium, these two are traveling the world; either with their full band for the sensational live show that is Soulwax or in the brotherly twosome as 2manyDJs.

While they are normally found rocking the larger stages of festivals, seeing a club show curated by these two is a privilege. Not to mention that they’ll be at Sound Nightclub which coincidentally has the best sound in town. LA, we’re in for a treat tomorrow.

It’s nice to watch someone’s progression and see that they are continuing to grow and master their skill. Mighty Mouse has always had a knack for releasing groovy disco and house tracks, but his most latest release is the pinnacle of his journey thus far. The astounding vocals from Monarchy’s Ra Black backing up Mighty Mouses’s funky beat brings the song together beautifully. Almost reminiscent of Michael Jackson, if I do say so myself. Excited to see where else Mighty Mouse takes his sound.

It’s hard to believe that it has been nearly a year since Cashmere Cat graced us with his beautiful debut EP Mirror Maru. Since then he’s been garnering more and more acclaim; getting booked at festivals and events around the world, most recently opening for Dillon Francis on his I Don’t Give A Fuck or Santa tour.

Today our favorite feline released “With Me”, his beaming new single. While showcasing his distinct production style along a melancholic piano intro, the uplifting synths and percussion climax is unlike anything we’ve ever heard. “With Me” will be featured on Cashmere Cat’s Wedding Bells EP, set to released in January. Kitty’s back y’all.

HUSBANDS

At once sounding like Architecture in Helsinki with their pitchy vocals and chambered symphonics to dreamy dance-pop reminiscent of Hot Chip, Marseilles’ pop-trio HUSBANDS have burst on the scene with a musical range that makes them a choice option when you can’t figure out what to listen to (it’s a good thing). They’ve got 5 tracks out right now, and they’re all worth a listen. I can’t get enough.

Leaks

It is only fitting that I stumble upon Australian Thomas Guida, or Leaks, as the night sky spills. Refracted streetlights bounce off the street to the pace of the beat. The chilling breeze carries the smell of nourished foliage through my window. Sporadic echoes of tire on wet asphalt add a nice touch to this contemplative music.
