EPs (extended play) were in steady flow this year. They’ve been more common for DJs trying to find their niche in different subgenres, but that didn’t keep indie/rock artists teasing us with little samplers before releasing an album. Given the success of these EPs, it’s safe to say we can expect bigger things from these cats in 2012:

Gonna try something new this week…I’m especially fond of every track, so you get my two cents for each!

Knife Party’s first EP is being released today for free! I was fortunate enough to get a listen to this last week and I have NOT been able to let this one down. Massive dubstep track that blasts through really good speakers. Kinda reminds me of Skrillex + Rusko. I’m obsessed. Get the full EP here.
Knife Party – Fire Hive (Original Mix) (Dubstep)

Don’t know how I missed these tracks because they’re fairly old. But hey! It’s like getting a new release! They should call these “BB-Sides” because they were extra tracks on a CD if you bought it from Best Buy.
Foster the People – Chin Music For The Unsuspecting Hero (B-Sides) (Indie/Alt)
Foster the People – Love (B-Sides) (Indie/Alt)

Zeds Dead…these f*ckin’ guys blew my mind at Haunted Mansion this year. They played a lot of their original tracks that hit SO hard live. This one is no different. When it drops to dub in the middle, I die. Expecting big things from them in 2012.
Zeds Dead – Ruckus The Jam (Original Mix) (Electronic)

Boys Noize released a compilation album of 24 remixes that he’s done over the years. Some we’ve heard. A lot we haven’t. All of them unique in their own right. Boys Noize proves once again that time has no effect on his production abilities. The release is out in the UK and France for now, but will be out in the US and internationally later this month.
Kaiser Chiefs – Everyday I Love You Less And Less (Boys Noize Remix) (Electronic)
Teenage Bad Girl – Cocotte (Boys Noize Rework) (Electronic)

Bingo Players have a knack for putting out some of the most quality house tracks out of everyone. I love their sound! Has a kind of feel to it that makes you want to be in an arena with 100k people. This song is no “Cry (Just A Little),” but it’s just as dancy if not more.
Bingo Players – Mode (Original Mix) (House/Electronic)

Shook: The boogie king. Older remix, but my friend sent it to me and I fell in love all over again. He’s got a real special ability with the sounds he makes. So groovy! Get his stuff from SoundCloud.
The Ting Tings – Hang It Up (Shook Remix) (Indie/Dance)

TGIK is awesome! Don’t really know what genre he falls into because he tends to mix it up a lot. His synths cut to the core, and this little track is a lot of fun. More for summer time, but hopefully it brings y’all some warmth in this gloomy winter.
TGIK – Pick Myself Up (TGIK Remix & Tribute to Peter Tosh) (Dance/Reggae)

Well I never thought I’d see the day, but here is my first post on the “god of trance” himself: Tiesto. As I’ve said before I don’t like to hate on other music, but in the past I never found a reason to go looking for his stuff. Not sure why. The one thing that seemed to be unanimous about the guy was that his live shows are among nothing else. I missed Tiesto at Coachella ’10 because 2 Many DJ’s were set to rock at the same time and I wasn’t about to miss my boys. My friends said Tiesto’s light show was SO good that they blacked out and don’t remember it. Bit of a hype up huh? I never wanted to go out of my way to see him, but when your openers are Porter Robinson, Dada Life, and Diplo; and your tickets are for $40 after fees; and you’re breaking the record for highest attendance for any single DJ; I’d be a fool to not attend. It was a undoubtedly a damn, memorable night.

Mad Decent Block Party made it’s final stop at the city of angels yesterday, and everything went better than expected! I don’t know if I had low expectations because of it being free, all ages, in LA, or the whole ‘DJ’ Kaskade thing that happened the other week, but it ended up being one of the coolest free events I’ve been to! Parking was a bitch and so were the lines..usual pains. I was able to look past that with Dillon Francis throwing down an absolutely killer set, all the sponsors hooking everyone up with free gear, and the dodgeball area was the best. I hadn’t played dodgeball since my preteen years so that was a bit of a throwback. My only qualm of the day was the guy who went out of his way to write on a shirt “If you shuffle you are a faggot.” I know I’m just feeding the beast by acknowledging him…….but fuck that guy. Fuck anyone who tries to be extra controversial especially at other peoples’ expense. I really hate that stuff. But yeah just wanted to get that off my chest haha enjoy the list! YOLO

WIth all the recent hype and appreciation for big room house from the rising popularity of huge festivals, Swedish House Mafia is getting a run for their money. After moving up 33 spots, Avicii is sitting comfortably at 6th best DJ in the world (according to polls) and SHM at 10th. Despite the fact that Guetta being at #1 invalidates the entire list, the dance music scene just got a lot more interesting. Speaking of interesting, cool to see Coldplay branching into the scene, calling on these two superstars to recreate the single from their upcoming album. It’s called Mylo Xyloto and it’s set to release on October 24th!

Bringing Coldplay into the house mix was a solid game plan. Chris Martin’s voice has this strange feel good ability that is a prime addition to any big room house track. Between the two, I gotta give it to the #6 DJ in the world, Avicii. I like SHM, and they have a particular sound that just works, but it seems rushed. You can hear the extra effort Avicii put into this mix, and it just plain old hits a lot better at the drop. Both are quality tracks if you’re into the more uplifting house shebang. Steer clear if you’re into the more face melting stuff, and go here.
