Mortal Kombat, the most essential arcade fighter game from the 90’s, is back and bigger than ever. More importantly, the game is being graced with an epic soundtrack. Some big names include MSTRKRFT, Harvard Bass, Congorock, Felix Cartal and none other than Skrillex. Its weeks before the release of MK 9 but to hold us out, Skrillex dropped his theme song for the scaly green warrior, Reptile.
Regrettably, I wasn’t able to make it to Miami this year for the 13th annual Ultra Music Festival. However, thanks to the power of the almighty Internet (all hail), I got you guys covered.
Sure I could tell you about the history making 150,000 dance-loving people that attended. I could tell you about the impeccable sun-drenched weather or how trashed Downtown Miami got. Conversely, these are useless statistics. Let me enlighten on what actually matters, the music.
Laidback Luke
LL has been killing it the past couple years. His track selection is pretty extraordinary; the man drops straight bangers for an hour.
This young Swede impresses me more and more every time I hear his sets. Hands down, Avicii is at the top of the game right now. If there’s one kid that knows how to make a progressive set, this is it.
Dominating Ultra this year and possibly the best Dutch House DJ on the scene, Afrojack dropped it fat. Like Laidback Luke, Afrojack keeps you on your toes with banger after crazy banger. With the release of his new track, ‘Doing It Right’, Ajack’s future is looking bright.
fun facts released from Miami:
• Carl Cox, Steve Lawler and Ferry Corsten played at an invite-only party at the Mokai. Did I mention only 200 people were invited? Talk about intimate.
• Kim Fai announced he’s working with Snoop Dogg on a new track. Also, house legend Roger Sanchez is working on dance material for 50 Cent.

Skrillex has been the hottest thing to hit the electronic scene since Darude’s Sandstorm. He got his hands on Benny Benassi’s ‘Cinema’ and flopped it upside down in a batter of filth before sprinkling it with his infamous chest cavity shaking w0mp. Apparently, Skrillex can do no wrong.
22 year old Rob Goden has a special gift, somehow he can transform simple gameboy sound effects into filthy heart wrenching dubstep; it’s like Mario on crack. In one of his newest creations, Rob takes on one of my favorite 80’s classics and gives it that dub treatment, Cutting Crew’s ‘Died In Your Arms’. I’m not sure where Rob got his name, Monster! Monster!, but I like it.

It’s 2011, you know what that means, we only have a year until the grand cycle of evolution will culminate winter solstice… humanity will face inevitable demise. Fortunately for you, I’ll be supplying fresh beats all year; when our atoms spontaneously implode on 1/1/12, our feet will be shuffling and our faces smiling. Here’s to another year of treble, mid-range, and of course, w0mp.
Feed Me (aka Jon Gooch) joined forces with legendary mau5trap recordings back in 2008. Gooch has been periodically releasing remixes, however, his eager fan base was hungry for more. Gooch finally delivered the main course and, what a delicacy it is. Gooch went all out on this one, I’m talking steak, potatoes, french fries, cornbread… the whole nine yards. Interestingly, Feed Me’s EP has so many different influences; Skrillex bbqed the steak, Porter Robinson mashed the potatoes, Busy P battered the fries and Feed Me thew in his flavor with a dash of cornbread. So many shapes would normally feel overwhelming, but Feed Me fuses dub, glitch and house in a barrage of savory beats. My compliments to the chef.
Every Track On Feed Me’s EP ‘Feed Me’s Big Adventure’ receives Chronic Mncher’s stamp of approval.
Picking the top 10s was no easy task, 2010 was an epic year for beatz and bangers. Here’s my list of personal favorites, in no specific order. This isn’t a list of what was most popular, I think if I heard Swedish House Mafia’s ‘One’ anymore times I’d probably puke all over my desk, I’m sure you all feel the same way. Download, enjoy and r0ll in the new year.
Christmas came early this year, but Santa’s not delivering presents in neatly gift-wrapped boxes. Santa’s dropping bombs of W0mp all across the country, a national pandemic, kids can’t stop dancing. Now I’m not talking about white bearded obese Santa; this year, Santa is disguised as 21 year Zedd. Anton Zaslavski a.k.a. “Zedd” has only been producing electro music for less than a year, a baby in the scene, but he hit the ground running. Zedd has a unique style; his remixes still maintain an essence of the original while adding his touch of filthy w0mp. Nasty chops, unexpected dub and filthy electro… You better watch out. You better not cry. Better not pout. I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town.
I’m feeling extra generous… perhaps its the Christmas spirit, but trust me, all of these tracks are 5 star bangers

The new Skrillex (aka Sonny Moore) album took me by complete surprise. Seems like just yesterday he released “My Name Is Skrillex,” which he recorded, produced and released on his own early in the summer. You can download it free here. His remix of “In For the Kill” and “Alejandro” earned him most of his acclaim early on. His talents didn’t go unnoticed. Recently signed to Deadmau5’s Mau5trap Recordings, Skrillex wasn’t about to disappoint with his latest titled “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.” I’ve never heard electronic and dubstep so seamlessly intertwined in the way that Skrillex does. A lot of it is from his hardcore background as the frontman in From First To Last. He leads you up to the dubstep breakdowns with fast paced, sliced-and-diced, electronic samples and then drops into the nastiest, hurricane of bass and wobbles. If horror was a genre, this would definitely fall into it. He doesn’t seem to give us a break with his constant releases of tracks/remixes/albums, and this seems to be only the beginning.
