indie

I have nothing official to say about this band because I can’t read French but I can say that their music is ridiculously catchy. I also have no idea what they are saying. Mystery lyrics aside, their music has a fresh sunny summer sound that I’ll definitely be over-playing for the next few months.

Classixx | Buy Hanging Gardens | Holy Ghost! | PHOTOS

Last Sunday in Orange County marked the first day of the Holy Ghost! / Classixx tour. With the recent release of the DFA Records mini doc and Classixx debut album Hanging Gardens, there was a considerable amount of hype around the evening. Classixx are no strangers to Southern California, and though many in attendance had seen them before (myself included), this was the dawn of their new era. Let’s just say they’re ready to take on the resurgence of LIVE music head on. With their synths lined up and mics at the ready, they took the crowd on a whole new journey. They even brought out a member of Holy Ghost to play the guitar! It couldn’t have been more rock and roll, despite playing a primarily house and dance music set; proving they were the choice openers for the big show.

Behind Classixx was a series of gadgets and gizmos seemingly towering over the stage. Control boards, synths galore, drums, pianos…It was like an electronic and tech nerd’s playground. Holy Ghost took the stage with 6 men strong and appropriately covered the entire stage. Throughout the performance, the members would switch between instruments, having their turn at everything the set up offered. There’s nothing that adds to the energy of a performance more than when the artists are moving around, staying active, and interacting with the crowd. This being Holy Ghost’s first club show in some time proved to bring the crowd together in a special way. Their live set up was one of the coolest, most interactive I’ve seen. Looking forward to both of these artists’ promising careers.

SPEAK

SPEAK are Troupe Gammage, Nick Hurt, Joey Delahoussaye, and Jake Stewart. They are an indie synthpop rock ensemble based in our nation’s Live Music Capital: Austin, Texas. With their well-crafted and catchy melodies and contagiously happy vibes, we can only tell that they would put on a great live show. A recent A Capella project of theirs speaks wonders to their musical affinity outside of the realm of indie. Case in point: the Alicia Keys cover provided below. Its absolutely beautiful.

We were first introduced to this band when they covered Daft Punk‘s Digital Love (a C+A+D favourite) about a year ago; they add their happy, pop vibe to the track perfectly. Since then, we hadn’t really kept up with their work – to our own misfortune. Thanks to RAC, we were happily reacquainted when he spotlighted their newest single, Peaks. It is really good – as should be expected of their work. Check out their Soundcloud here and download some free stuff!

CHVRCHES

CHVRCHES are a Scottish trio that make some incredibly melodic electro-pop. Front woman Lauren Mayberry has the perfect voice to contrast and cut through the deep bass and synthed out melodies. They have just recently released their debut EP Recovery and a handful of remixes for some notable artists including Prince and St. Lucia. If you’re into Purity Ring but want something that is a little poppier but with the same amount of emotion, look no further than CHVRCHES.

Born Ruffians | Buy Birthmarks

Last week we had the humbling opportunity to interview the eclectic Born Ruffians at the beautiful Troubadour in LA. A show that will definitely hold a place close to not only our hearts, but those of the band as well. You could feel the excitement reverberate through both floors of the venue. After the thunderous set, we sat down with the pulsating energy of the band and bassist Mitch DeRosier.

Check the interview after the jump, and don’t forget the video of “Foxes Mate For Life” if you want to catch the vibes of the night.

Cayucas | Buy ‘Bigfoot’
Tickets to Observatory Santa Ana June 7

Cayucas screams summer. It’s a sound that takes me back to the months directly preceding college. The sort of carefree, borderline reckless transition into more hopeful horizons. A clean slate! Driving beach side. Windows down. Music up. It’s hard to compare to those moments of peace, yet Cayucas seems to take us there through their uplifting spirits. Being from San Luis Obispo, CA makes them no stranger to surfer culture, and it’s pleasantly apparent in their music.

With the recent release of Cayucas’ debut album ‘Bigfoot,’ it’s time they caught traction. And what better for music like this than the eve of Summer? Their single ‘High School Lover’ wraps up all my nostalgia in a sand soaked beach towel, and the video is a work of art(s and crafts)! Reminds me of the first time I saw Vampire Weekend’s ‘A-Punk’ video. They go on tour this month with two SoCal stops, so be ready to catch them before they blow up. Tracklist after the jump.

Louis La Roche | Scenery Mixtape 1-4

Our main man Brett Ewels AKA Louis La Roche comes back at us with the fifth installment of his legendary Scenery Mixtape. When he first started this series in 2011, he released versions 1, 2, and 3 on the first day of May, June, and July respectively. Each mix was like nothing we’ve ever heard, and still get countless hours of playtime to this day! (My favorite is #3.) The 4th took an interesting turn, but didn’t lose it’s play-anywhere-anytime vibe. Number 5 is no different. And as usual, it’s up for free download. Maybe we can expect more the next two months? Who knows. Soak this up.
