The Yost theater is well on their way of being the top contender in Orange County’s battle for best EDM venue. It all took a turn after LED Events saw the potential of the rising scene in the area and invested in the Yost with a crazy lineup of shows. The first event we couldn’t miss, and debatably one of their biggest: Kill the Noise. Read on after the jump:
Every year it gets harder and harder to leave Indio as Coachella draws to a close. This year is even worse, because they’re doing it all over again this weekend! Even though I wish I was back, I’m just happy to have been a part of one of them. The countdown begins yet again for next year, and I have these amazing artists to help hold me off until then. Check them out after the jump:
I was fortunate enough (understatement) to get tickets for the sold out Soft Pack/Arctic Monkeys show at the Glasshouse in Pomona this week. Though I’d already seen the Soft Pack once and Arctic Monkeys twice, I was really just excited to see them in such an intimate venue. Granted, Arctic Monkeys are one of my all-time favorite bands. There are times when I would rather stay in and listen to Arctics by myself than hang out with a lot of people–a slightly sad but true statement. And I’ve met and bonded with some of my best friends over Arctic Monkeys. They’re just one of those bands that if you love them, you loooooooove them. In any case, I was pretty stoked to see them again.
The Soft Pack opened for them and got the energy in the place really stirring. They’re just some cool dudes with cool style. Their beach-rock vibes are quite addictive and make for a pretty rad live performance. My only complaint was that their set was really short. I’d love to see them again, hopefully with a longer set list.

I don’t really know where to begin with the Arctics’ performance other than it was all around the best experience I’ve ever had at a concert. It completely exceeded my expectations–which were high, mind you, because Arctics have a reputation as being stellar live performers. Their energy was incredible, their sound spot on. And on top of that, the entire audience was in love. The fact that the Glasshouse is such a small venue (the stage isn’t really a stage at all, it’s more of a ramp) only amplified the experience. My only qualm with their set list was that it ended. Other than that, they played everything I would have wanted them to, including two of their S.I.A.S. b-sides, Evil Twin and R U Mine? They came back for an encore and played Suck It and See, Fluorescent Adolescent and closed with 505. I hate to sound melodramatic or trite, but this show was the closest I have ever been to perfection. I’m dying to see them again in another small venue.

Young the Giant set sail on their most epic headlining tour last week. Sold out date after sold out date and we were there to document part of it! San Diego brought the heat, and I haven’t seen that sort of energy from a crowd for this kinda music in much much too long. Big things are headed their way! Check back with us for the video interview in the next few days.
A-Trak/Diplo Belasco Theatre LA 2/11
First off, the bass is a little overwhelming at first, but it gets better! I was wondering how they were going to split the set times for the Pre-Gramy party, and when I saw A-Trak and Diplo were playing together I freaked. It was just bound to be a party, considering the different types of DJs they are. Apparently the last time they did it was 2006? Two of the biggest DJs in our game. Killing it.
SkrillexBelasco Theatre LA 2/11
Fuck the hype. Skrillex is always so fun to see! His music cut out at the beginning for some reason, and it’s starting to seem like a trend with him at this point? Whatever. We got the biggest pit going for his entire set! Took me back to my hardcore days. I know a lot of you may not appreciate that, but Sonny would. If you can’t handle the pit then stay out of the shit! On another note, slipped and cut my hand open on some broken glass. Shouts to the chick who gave me hand sanitizer. That shit burned.
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour The Echoplex LA 2/14
Finally got to catch the epic organization that is The Asteroids Galaxy Tour on Valentine’s day, and what more can I say than “WOW!” A lot more actually…these guys were just as glorious live as I had imagined. One guy on trombone, another on the sax. The guitarist and the bassist and the drummer just getting down super groovy with the sickest, psychedelic aura about them. Everyone was switching on and off the keys/synths which made for one of the coolest live performance from a band that I’ve seen in a long time. Not to mention how hot and sexy front lady Mette Lindberg was. She brought it all together in a hot new way. Highly recommend seeing them or listening to them if you can. Their new album “Out of Frequency” is going to need some serious competition to beat it for best album of 2012. Yeah I said it.

It’s getting harder and harder to focus on school lately, especially with my increasing desires to go to all the concerts that are happening in Southern California. Call it a crippling addiction? I don’t care. I love it. And I love sharing these experiences with you guys! No better way to live in “the now” than at a concert with like-minded people. Here’s how last week went:

After ticket sales came to a close a bit earlier than expected and a bunch of my friends lagged, this show ended up being one for the bros. Perfect! I could have called it, considering how small Key Club is and the fact that HARD was putting it on. But it was all built up to be a super epic and intimate show…for the bros. We were running late and I didn’t want to miss ANY of Gesaffelstein, assuming he’d perform before Brodinski. And I was just hoping they’d play together for a larger portion of the set. Check some tracks and the HD video I got after the jump.
Starfucker made their way back to California after a 4 month hiatus to start their U.S. tour, and we weren’t about to miss it! For some reason, they chose to leave Los Angeles out of the loop, but still made for two SoCal dates that we got to go too. Our photographer Philip Mendoza shooting the Pomona stop. I know what you’re thinking, “Woah bro. Same band? Two nights in a row? Doesn’t it get boring? Repetitive? Lose it’s magic?” No! Not at all. First, let’s disregard the fact that these guys are one of the most entertaining live bands I’ve seen. This is of course, as far as their ability to be better than the recordings and their sheer RAW energy when it comes to performing live. Let’s also disregard the fact that their lightshow is equipped with multicolored lasers that move all over the venue, giving them the most magical silhouettes throughout the performance (this and this). That being said, the two shows were very different. Check out the HD videos after the jump..

I’ve been undergoing constant withdrawals with last weekend already fading into the past. Although, the performances I saw and the flawlessness of the fourth annual HARD Haunted Mansion will forever hold a special place in my heart. It’s crazy to see how far this scene has come and how many people stayed true to the love for one of the best parties of the year. This year especially was filled with some of the most overlooked DJ’s that will be the driving forces of tomorrow’s music, and we were there to document it. It’s a funny feeling to see the new and old faces on the stages that held the likes of Justice, deadmau5, DJAM (RIP), Boys Noize, Soulwax, sebastiAn, Diplo and to think how far they all have gone. It was SO HARD (pun intended) to pick favorites because everyone played their best sets that I’ve ever seen. After much consideration, here are the top dogs of Haunted Mansion 2011. (more…)
