concert recall

Bondax

They say “The third time’s the charm,” and though I don’t know how much emphasis we can legitimately put on that saying, it happened to be the case on Thursday night. I had been to The Roxy twice before; both times my night was cut short due to the place selling out. Once with Super Mash Bros and the other for DJAM (RIP). DJAM was the toughest. Waited in line 3 hours and the show sold out 3 people before me! Sometimes you gotta lose. Well, Thursday, I finally got to see The Roxy from within the walls and it all made sense. The place is tiny! The fact it’s got as much history as it does, with shows of the caliber they’ve hosted made it that much more epic. Probably one of the most intimate venues in Hollywood, next to the Echo and Troubadour. These are my favorite types of places to see artists. Very special vibes within the crowd.

This night in particular was probably one of the Roxy’s slower nights. It was to be expected since Bondax are just beginning their trek to bigger, better, and more deserved things. That didn’t keep some of dance music’s big shots and LA natives to show up. Them Jeans and Felix Cartal were both in attendance and Felix even told me that he wasn’t surprise the place wasn’t at capacity. When the “2 teenage producers” took the stage, it might as well have been a sold out crowd. Everyone was packed to the front. Yelling in excitement as the UK kids’ made their debut in LA. The cheers picked up as they dropped their most recent release “Gold” and Justin Martin’s “Don’t Go.” One of the highlights for me was when the surprised us with Ludacris’ “What’s Your Fantasy.” Haha shit had me on the floor. It was a dancing frenzy! I love when the crowd is packed with people passionate about the headliner. The more underground the artist, the more united the crowd becomes. Definitely a special night and I’m glad I finally got to see one of LA’s most historic venues.

Sorry for the camera phone photos! Our photog is almost 21,
so soon we’ll be getting high defs of everything.

Flight Facilities | Fred Falke

Halloween being on a Wednesday has me asking myself a heap of questions: Which weekend is the Halloween weekend? How many costumes am I going to actually need vs. How many will I repeat? Do I dress up tonight? Will I go trick or treating?! First world problems aside, it’s like we get an extended holiday. Halloween parties started formally this past Thursday, and it looks like all of LA’s festivities will end with a bang at HARD’s Day of the Dead. Last night we decided to stay local and go see dance music legends Fred Falke and Flight Facilities! Videos, words, giant-blow-up-wieners, and more after the jump…

Gramatik | Download Beatz & Pieces Vol. 1

The days leading up to this show felt like weeks. Every once and awhile an event comes around that you are especially confident in. A show that you know is going to be at the right place, filled with the right people. At Bassnectar shows, everyone is family. And as for the Palladium? Debatably the best venue in Los Angeles. One of the world’s music capitols. I mean what else could you ask for? “A good opener!” Well, that night we just happened to be in luck: Gramatik’s been on the up and up, especially since we interviewed him, and Bassnectar wanted the crowd to have only the freshest beats as a warm up. Enjoy the pictures and scope the full review of their sets after the jump!

The Shins FaceBook | Event Photos | Buy PORT OF MORROW

We had the opportunity to snag tickets last week to the Shins performance at the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles. We got there just in time to see Washed Out play Amor Fati, closing up his opening act. The Shins took the stage shortly after. I must admit I wasn’t sure what to expect, having never seen an indie band play at such a large venue before. The New Mexico five-piece delivered a stellar performance from beginning to end. They opened with Caring Is Creepy and closed with Sleeping Lessons, returning to the stage for a three-song encore. Their set was a healthy blend of new songs and old classics including Phantom Limb, Kissing the Lipless, Girl Sailor, The Rifle’s Spiral, Australia, Simple Song and It’s Only Life.

The Shins possess the kind of synergy and raw talent it takes to make for a great live performance. Their energy was contagious throughout the entire show; it was great to see an audience of that size so into the music. With the kind of skill they have as a band, it is not a surprise that they are such a commanding stage presence. The title track from their most recent release Port of Morrow was chill-inducing, with an ethereal vibe that filled the entire theater. Sleeping Lessons and New Slang were arguably the highlights of the show. It’s great to see a band of their caliber still going strong after so many years. Many of us can agree, The Shins were a gate-way drug into great music.

TEED FaceBook | Event Photos | Buy TROUBLE

I don’t want this concert recall being past due to take away from how special that night was. Let alone, how important it is for me to do my best to explain in detail what exactly went down. As far as dance music goes, what you get from a TEED set is unlike anything else. This is largely attributed to the crowd. No random Joe-Shmo is going to go to a Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs show. It was filled with true lovers! Allow me to explain after the jump…

LA’s premier music festival laid another milestone last weekend that’s not to be forgotten anytime soon. For everyone there, whether working at the fest or simply being a guest, HARD Summer was something special. This was our fourth HARD Summer, and we were able to get a behind the scenes look at one of our most anticipated festivals of the year. It’s always so tough narrowing these down to a “Best Of” list, but the festival would not have been the same without the contributions of the following artists. Check them out after the jump:
