Flight Facilities | Fred Falke

Halloween being on a Wednesday has me asking myself a heap of questions: Which weekend is the Halloween weekend? How many costumes am I going to actually need vs. How many will I repeat? Do I dress up tonight? Will I go trick or treating?! First world problems aside, it’s like we get an extended holiday. Halloween parties started formally this past Thursday, and it looks like all of LA’s festivities will end with a bang at HARD’s Day of the Dead. Last night we decided to stay local and go see dance music legends Fred Falke and Flight Facilities! Videos, words, giant-blow-up-wieners, and more after the jump…

Fred Falke has been making moves in the dance music scene since the turn of the millennium. It’s a mystery as far as why it’s taken me so long to see him, but I don’t think it could have been in a better fashion. These intimate venue shows bring out all the colors of the performer. The show being at the severely underrated, under appreciated Detroit Bar made it that much better. It being Halloween Weekend Pt. 1, the place was decked out in cobwebs and everyone was dressed up in their creative costumes. Cats everywhere, school girls, Colonel Sanders, Dead mi5e, Felix Baumgartner, a girl with a shirt that just said “SLUT” on it. The tone was set before the DJs even took to the decks, and it was only a matter of time ’til we got what we paid for.

Fred showed his face promptly at 11:30 and didn’t waste anytime. The people were hungry for their disco and funky bass lines and Fred provided in so many ways. He would even pull out a bass guitar to lay down the bass lines LIVE right before us! It’s such a treat when a DJ goes that extra mile and makes the performance that much more real. Highlights of his set for me were his remixes of Reaching Out and Golden Cage. Absolutely fantastic records, and Fred matched the energy of the crowd throughout.

During Fred’s set, Flight Facilities were making their descent to OC from LA, where they opened for The Presets alongside Yuksek and OLIVER. Busy. Busy. The crowd got anxious as they lagged fifteen minutes after their set time. When they started, people stormed the stage and attempted to keep their dances going until the security guards stepped in. They started with a sample of “Crave You” that they weaved through their entire set. Teasing us nearly over the edge! They filled their time with the grooviest of tunes. Bottles were being passed around. People were singing. Jumping. I think we were just about 2 broken bottles/glasses short of this party being classified as a “shit-show,” but nothing seemed to stop this crowd.

When the time came and they were finally wrapping up their set with “Crave You,” all the lights were coming on. Detroit Bar had seen enough. Flight Facilities fought for us to keep it going, but we were no match for the big, angry security guard with no friends and a small wiener. Which he compensated for by confiscating the giant-blow-up-wiener everyone was throwing around! Fun killer. I’m pretty sure I’ve said “wiener” more times in this post than I have in the entirety of this blog’s life. This looks like a safe place to end.
