EPs (extended play) were in steady flow this year. They’ve been more common for DJs trying to find their niche in different subgenres, but that didn’t keep indie/rock artists teasing us with little samplers before releasing an album. Given the success of these EPs, it’s safe to say we can expect bigger things from these cats in 2012:

5. Porter Robinson – Spitfire EP (Electro/Dubstep/Moombahton)
This couldn’t have came at a better time. Porter was set to do work opening up for Tiesto on his college invasion tour, and this EP couldn’t showcase Porter’s talents any better. Talk about an all star lineup for the remixes too: Knife Party, Downlink, Kill the Noise. This kid’s doing work.
Porter Robinson – Unison (Knife Party Remix)
4. DOM – Sun Bronzed Greek Gods (Indie/Rock)
Dom came relatively out of nowhere for me. I love going to shows where the openers become one of my main squeezes for an extended period of time. They opened up for Thee Oh Sees and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Feel good, dancy synth-pop.
DOM – Jesus
3. Skrillex – More Monsters and Nice Sprites (Bass Music)
It was tough trying to choose between this and the more recent Bangarang EP, but it went without saying that Skrillex deserved to be in this list. I don’t care what anyone says about Skrillex, be it praise or hate. You either like this style or you don’t, and I love it. As far as electronic music goes, he’s changed the game and that’s undeniable. Fingers crossed he wins Best New Artist! Even though he’s not new…
Skrillex – First Of The Year (Equinox) (Original Mix)
2. Dillon Francis – Westside EP (Moombahton)
This EP changed everything I felt about moombahton. Dillon Francis set the bar for the legit genre, and he’s exploded into the spotlight ever since. Everyone wants a piece. And by good reason! He consistently kills it. Everything he touches turns into a high energy banger. I stand by Dillon Francis!
Dillon Francis – Masta Blasta
1. Alex Turner – Submarine EP (Brit Rock)
My most played tracks of the year. Probably because it’s so short and I literally had it on repeat for days at a time, but still. This was the original soundtrack for the movie Submarine, which Witler swears by and I still gotta watch. For now, I’ll just listen to these tracks and the best EP of the year.
Alex Turner – Piledriver Walts
Delightful Mention
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Household Goods EP (Electronic)
Skrillex – Bangarang EP (Luvstep)
Kill the Noise – Kill Kill Kill EP (Dubstep)
OVERWERK – The Nth (Electro House)
Young the Giant – Remix EP (Indie)
