One of the best parts about running a blog like this is keeping up with artists coming in and going out of their scene. Some continue a slow and steady rise to their deserved spot on a headlining stage. Others get their five minutes of fame, and then they are gone faster than they got in. Not only is it cool to see artists do well that deserve it, it’s inspirational. It makes it that much more real that if you truck through the harder times, stay persistent, and don’t give up, it WILL pay off. Starfucker is one such story that continues to surprise me every time I see them.

Starfucker seemingly reached rockstar status by choosing to keep anticipations high, coming out much later than their 10:15 posted set time. This stunt is a patented excitement builder that worked famously for Starfucker as the curtains unveiled. A massive LED screen showed its way to the crowd behind lines of synthesizers, stacks of guitars and drums as the show began with “Hard Smart Beta.” In our interview with them, frontman and multi-instrumentalist Josh Hodges said this was his favorite song to play live because of how fun it is for him to get on the drums. A highlight of these guys’ live performances is when they showcase their true musical talents by constantly rotating between singing, synths, guitars, and percussions. They all have got a little trick up their sleeves, and it translates to a high energy performance that is rarely matched.

This being their LA release of the new album “Miracle Mile” left a bit of question as to how they were to go about a show. Where an artists thrives is their selection of old and new material and how they integrate them all in a way the crowd will still appreciate. Of course they played their new hits Atlantis, While I’m Alive, Sazed, and the like, but there will always be people who are more partial to older songs. Starfucker chose to feed those members! Going WAY back to German Love, Florida, Mystery Cloud…one of my all time favorite songs of their’s that gives you no choice but jump around with excitement. Hey! If you don’t do it, everyone else around you will. That’s just what a Starfucker show guarantees.

The room was filled with positive emotion from start to finish. You could feel it within the band and up through the balcony. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t tear up when they claimed it was their last song and they played Bury Us Alive. I just got so happy thinking about how when they first played in LA years ago was at The Echo. One of LA’s smallest venues AND it was for free. Seeing them sell out one of LA’s most premier stages makes success doing what you love that much more real for me. A band I’ve seen live countless times and plan on seeing countless more. It’s a loyalty thing at this point.
