Yeah so it is true that the whole dance music scene is getting more and more commercial. Deadmau5 doing sky scraper sized projection shows for a phone. HARD being bought out by LiveNation and having a lot more sponsors selling stuff onsite. Pitbull taking TJR’s dance floor burner and turning it into……whatever he calls his productions. Lest we forget, no evil comes without some good. With big business tapping into the scene, we’ve been getting more and more free concerts! Something I’ll never get tired of. Sony is hosting Poolside for a free event at their store in South Coast Plaza. All you gotta do is RSVP (click here). Come. Chill. Dance. Eat free tacos. Buy shit (if you want). It’s all in good fun! Allow me to add events like this to reasons why I f*cking love southern California, and you should too.

Flosstradamus | Krewella | Run DMT

I got a last minute opportunity to crash one of LA’s premier Friday night event series and was prepared to capitalize. After bending over backwards to situate a ride, I was ready to let it all out. I wasn’t about to drive myself and sacrifice partying with trap specialists Flosstradamus in one of the genre’s world capitals. No, no, no. The plan was to get turnt up. Am I using that right? Fresh off their Wet & Reckless tour with Dillon Francis, the hoodie boys were expected to put together an unforgettable set for the sold out Hollywood crowd.

Starfucker | Preorder Miracle Mile

Starfucker had been teasing on their facebook about big news that was to come on Tuesday…I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t scream like a school girl when I found out what it was. I’m not here to lie. I’m here to share facts. Their tour will take them from coast to coast and will include Los Angeles this time at the Fonda on March 2nd. Their live shows are just about everything you could ask for. Live drums. Enthusiastic guitar jams. Lights. Synths. EVERYONE dancing. It’s just a special place to be. Listening to “While I’m Alive” is like revisiting a lost love. Such a warm feeling of curiosity and a yearning to find out more. The name comes from their bassist Shawn, who has a tattoo that says “Live while you are alive.” Takes me back to the YOLO mentality where every second of life needs to be considered, as it’s a gift. The track encapsulates their progress as a band, but their third full length will be different from previous releases. Frontman Josh Hodges formerly made all of Starfucker’s music on his own. In Miracle Mile, all the members come together to fine tune each individual track and make it a group effort. I simply can’t wait for this. Check the music, tour dates, and tracklist after the jump:

Tame Impala | Buy Lonerism

When a musician is able to convey a relatable feeling artistically, it considerably affects your attachment to that body of work. It makes everything seem more human. This is not a simple feat to accomplish and a void that electronic music will forever find very difficult to fill. Bands that are able to convey a specific emotion accurately are few and far between. As you can imagine, this varies from person to person, and sometimes it’s a timing thing. In Tame Impala’s sophomore release Lonerism, the idea of being alone flows consistently throughout. From the album cover having that “being on the outside looking in” feeling to the album’s final track Suns Coming Up, which touches on those sleepless or drug induced insomniac nights.

Theme of this album aside, it dives into the almost forgotten sounds of the psychedelic rock phases of the 60s and 70s. The phases that put an extra emphasis on getting lost in extended jam outs of live performances. With electronic production having a strong influence on the last half decade of music, this is a breath of fresh air. Where Tame Impala thrives is their near perfect balance of the advances in the electronic production of today and the classic rock vibes of artists a lot of us could never get enough of. I’m talking The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the like.

What makes this album so great is how every track is unique in what it is trying to say while maintaining its commitment to balance and consistency. On a followup release, bands usually find themselves in a slump, but Tame Impala takes a leap forward in perfecting their style. It’s a fresh take on a timeless sound that’s off the beaten path of a lot of music coming out today. The fact of it being as relatable as it is will contribute to this album being a go-to for years to come. Now I’m really just looking forward to seeing their name pop on festival bills so more people can experience them live. Coachella, I’m looking at you.

Now here are two names you don’t see getting tossed around together everyday! Chromeo has taken it in their own hands to guide the vibe of Boys Noize’s album opener What You Want in a completely new direction. Up beat techno and robotic vocoder quickly turn into the sexy disco and funky riffs of the dance legends. Looks like this is to promote an EP with What You Want and Ich R U having remixes by Jaques Lu Cont, Chromeo, Jimmy Edgar & D.I.M. This experimental release is set to come out January 14th on Boysnoize Records! This is exactly what I wanted, Boys Noize, so thank you.

St. Lucia is one of those bands that kept coming up in conversation, related artist recommendations, concert bills, and the like. About the third time a band comes up that I still haven’t researched, I’ll take it as a message from the universe. I was pleased to find the universe and I were on the same page with this release. St. Lucia’s self-titled EP was a trip abroad. It has the out-of-this-world feel of some of the Animal Collective I love, but manages to stay grounded in a way that reminds me of Miike Snow. It’s an 80s pop dream come true and is bound to be a treat for everyone on the synth wave.

The EP gets better as it goes along, but it really hit home with me after I heard All Eyes On You. I’m a sucker for catchy synth pop bands, and St. Lucia manages to do it well without getting too experimental. The EP took about 9 months to reach my library, but it really never is too late to pick up on quality music. The opening track is available for download for free (click here). The Twelves | Penguin Prison | TICKETS!

The Private Label Fridays series is wrapping up their six week run with two more events. Hosting a range of talent from Nosaj Thing, M83, Classixx, RAC, Washed out, and now this. Renowned French disco label Kitsune is taking the reins on the series’ second to last show, headlined by long time C+A+D favorite The Twelves. With support from acts making a massive wave in the dance music scene, this show will be everything we could ask for! I’m actually really excited. We love The Twelves. Seen them a heap of times, and no set compares to the other. Looking forward to seeing Penguin Prison and Anna Lunoe for the first time as well, at a venue I’ve been meaning to check out.
