Jagwar Ma | Soundcloud

With the booming Australian sound sprouting new bands left and right, Jagwar Ma was our most anticipated act at Coachella. Their eccentric breed of psychedelic synth-rock had us hungry for their set on Friday, and they delivered in so many ways. The energy was incredibly raw and fit the festival’s vibe uniquely. Fellow Aussies Cut Copy took one of their staple tracks and added a spacey dance beat that took it to an unthinkable level. Best part? It’s just over 8 minutes long.

They released this as part of a 4 track remix EP that you can find here. Lean back and zone out to this one.

13/20 Days

The great beauty of the internet today is that it allows us to communicate with people around the world like never before. Sure, this is obvious obvious, but it’s changed the game for the possibilities of music. It has created opportunities making it easier for the most unlikely collaborations between artists. There is no better example of this than the musical lovechild of indie sensation James Mercer (The Shins) and hip-hop producer Brian Burton (Danger Mouse). Who would have thought that these two would come together in a way that would so gloriously improve the legacy of these two established artists?

Upon the release of their self-titled debut album, they showed us how organic of concoction these two could create. Mercer’s nostalgic voice and the soulful rhythms of Danger Mouse come together in a way that makes it too easy to get immersed on their sonic canvas. A combination of live instruments and futuristics synths make this project unlike anything I’ve heard before. Sing alongs, orchestral choruses, groovy bass lines, catchy beats…these guys have got it all.

Their followup album After the Disco was released early this year and is looking to be one of the best albums of 2014. I’m calling it now. They have not done much touring yet which leads me to believe they have a lot of surprises and artistic elements prepared for their upcoming shows around LA and at Coachella. Without a doubt, my #1 “Most Excited For” of the festival.

We live in a day and age where the music world has never been more saturated. With access to modern advances, anyone can follow their dream and create something new and fresh. As every year passes and genres evolve, despite the saturation, the quality of music continues to thrive. Just when I think that a year of music can’t be topped, an innovative producer or artist opens a door that leads to a new world. That’s just what I love about music. It’s one of the most variable industries out there, and that’s precisely why I’m so confident in my decision to base my future around it. We’ve got to keep things interesting, right? With that, we give you or top picks of 2013. Check after the jump!

Lane 8 | Soundcloud

Almost exactly a year ago we asked Lane 8 to open for our first show featuring SHOOK in LA for the modest cost of transportation from SF. Since then Daniel has been consistently improving his production abilities and garnering attention from Anjunabeats to world renowned house label French Express. Let that be a testament to hard work and persistence! With no sign of slowing down, Daniel recently released one of my favorite songs of his to date, “How I Feel.” Using the borderline overused sample of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” in a freshly unique way, he crafts a beat that drives the legendary vocals. Keep your eyes peeled on this dude.

Darius | Soundcloud

Every once and awhile I’ll hear a song that puts me at absolute peace. It will be a song that reminds me of just how powerful music can be; emotionally, physically, inspirationally. It’s a feeling that I only can imagine is comparable to being in a complete meditative state. Simply being one with your existence. It sounds extreme, but I’m positive everybody hears a song that makes them feel like this at least once.

Recently for me, that song was Darius’ remix of Crayon’s “Give You Up” (released on Yuksek’s record label Partyfine). I was hooked. It only made sense when I found out he was half of C+A+D Favorite Cherokee. The smooth synths and airy vocals give it this dreamy feel that gets me every time I listen to it. Though I can comfortably say that track is the pinnacle of Darius’ solo career so far, every track on his soundcloud has something special to offer.

Blackedout | Soundcloud

Blackedout makes me think of the “one too many” bong-rip after a night of drinking. Melting into the couch. Drifting into never land. Contemplating on whether or not the last few shots were even worth it. As always is the case, probably not. But then you have this jam. Just let it take over and lay you to sleep in peace. It’s so dreamy. Thankfully Blackedout has it up for free download. Check this and his other winter vibe tracks on his soundcloud. His self-titled EP is downloadable free here.
