Where were you ten years ago? Are you doing anything now that you were doing back then? Commitments are hard to come by. Consistency, even more so. While I was going to hardcore shows, drinking alcohol for the first time and passing out in playgrounds, Josh Billings was setting sail on a journey fueled solely by passion. A passion that not many people in America would even know to adopt until years later. Josh stuck with it. And with that, Focus OC was born.

Not only have they hosted some of today’s most well respected DJs in house music, but they have maintained their integrity with a solid experience that makes each night unforgettable. Everyone there is always on the same page; always looking out for each other; always keeping in mind that happiness is the ultimate goal. Oh! And they make MEAN dollar tacos on the patio. Kill Frenzy | Justin Jay | Tickets

Southern California beware, there’s been some Dirtybird sightings. The first San Diego appearance of such creatures comes thanks to our friends at SoundLogik. Belgian wunderkind and headliner Kill Frenzy throws together techno and deep house with a tinge of hip-hop to create a downright funky ghetto-house sound. Expect the house to get rowdy when he starts toying with the decks.

Justin Jay comes back to San Diego to supply us with some much needed underground deep and tech-house. There are plenty of names out there under the same genre blanket, but Justin Jay brings a special funkiness to the scene by way of clever breaks and synth combinations.

SPIN Nightclub throws the California 2am curfew to the dirt. It is a 3-story club situated in a small industrial neighbourhood, and so they have the liberty to send patrons home at 4am. We suggest you rest up during the day; kick up your feet by the sand before throwing on your skipping kicks. The night of May 18th is going to be long and gone before you know it.

Cashmere Cat

Cashmere Cat (Magnus August Høiberg) is a 25 year old Norweigan DJ and producer. He represented Norway at the DMC DJ World Championships from 2006 through 2009 as DJ Final and was a finalist multiple years. Clearly this guy is no stranger to the tables or the electronic music scene. Under the Cashmere Cat moniker he has released the Mirror Maru EP and about a dozen remixes for artists including Lana Del Rey, Benzel and most recently Miguel. His sound is hard to really put into any specific genre. It’s definitely its own unique blend of R&B, Hip Hop, Bass Music and Pop. The end result is a glorious sound that is unmistakably Cashmere Cat.

Louis La Roche | Scenery Mixtape 1-4

Our main man Brett Ewels AKA Louis La Roche comes back at us with the fifth installment of his legendary Scenery Mixtape. When he first started this series in 2011, he released versions 1, 2, and 3 on the first day of May, June, and July respectively. Each mix was like nothing we’ve ever heard, and still get countless hours of playtime to this day! (My favorite is #3.) The 4th took an interesting turn, but didn’t lose it’s play-anywhere-anytime vibe. Number 5 is no different. And as usual, it’s up for free download. Maybe we can expect more the next two months? Who knows. Soak this up.

Lightning In A Bottle Info | The Do Lab | Tickets

Lightning In A Bottle returns to southern California after a 10 year roller coaster ride of a life. What started as a private party continued to grow, move, shape, and form to the festival it is today. Accumulating some of music’s most out-of-worldly artists and combining them with a unique experience, which is where most of the focus lies. Some may recall The Do Lab at Coachella, which prides itself on the unmatchable vibes of freedom and solace from the festival around it. It’s all about what you get and how you grow from Lightning In A Bottle.

Four locations later, L.I.B. has found what they claim to be the long-time new home of the festival at Lake Skinner in Temecula, CA. Most people were outraged at the move, but I can’t imagine that lasted after seeing pictures of this place. I mean, C’MON! Look at it! It’s glorious! I just want to go camping there. This new compact location brings the venue together in a much more efficient and not to mention beautiful way! Looking forward to finally seeing what this festival has to give, now that it’s reached the pinnacle of its seemingly long lasting career.

Put Benoit Simon and Benjamin “Sergio” Myers together and you get the dance music producer duo known simply as Benoit & Sergio. Having been raised on the likes of musical greats The Talking Heads and New Order, Benoit and Sergio have uniquely and effectively melded subtle foot tapping techno-house rhythms with downtrodden – but oddly content – narratives sung listlessly by Myers. Their off-put blend of musical style gives them a distinguishable face in the growing crowd of musicians coming out of Europe.
