Cashmere Cat | Soundcloud

It seems like way longer than a year and a half since Magnus August Høiberg aka Cashmere Cat stormed the scene with his unique style of bass music with his debut ‘Mirror Maru EP’. Kitty’s managed to stay busy since then, dropping a handful of remixes that found steady rotation from heavy hitters like Hudson Mohawke, Diplo and Baauer. He returns gloriously to a scene that’s become stale and diluted with his ‘Wedding Bells EP’ with layers, instruments, ranges and ambitions suitable for an LP. The blissed out vibes we saw in ‘Mirror Maru’ have become a bit more melancholic and dazed. The dissonance between the heavy 808 style bass and the twinkling melodies creates a contrast that can best be summed up as beautifully eerie weirdness. Cashmere Cat changes up his signature sound to stay fresh on his sophomore EP. Yet, as soon as you fire it up, you’ll appreciate that kitty’s still got you dancing in mind.

We live in a day and age where the music world has never been more saturated. With access to modern advances, anyone can follow their dream and create something new and fresh. As every year passes and genres evolve, despite the saturation, the quality of music continues to thrive. Just when I think that a year of music can’t be topped, an innovative producer or artist opens a door that leads to a new world. That’s just what I love about music. It’s one of the most variable industries out there, and that’s precisely why I’m so confident in my decision to base my future around it. We’ve got to keep things interesting, right? With that, we give you or top picks of 2013. Check after the jump!

Apolline d’Ash

Electronica gets spaced out thanks to Apolline d’Ash (Fabien Dalzin and Adrien Larouzée). Much like the psychic rhythms of HVOB or Recondite, this French duo’s fragile galactic sounds have guided us across the universe of our minds and back.

Yunizon Records

Yunizon Records has kept our attention with their finely crafted mixtapes that spotlight artists we’ve been all about lately (more on them soon). The label’s most recent project “Three Little Dreams” just came to a close; it took us for quite a ride. Feel free to join in on the experience.

Crooked Colours

Australian trio Crooked Colours (comprised of: Philip Slabber, Leon De Baughn, and Liam Merrett-Park) are another attestation that the surge of skilled production from down under is far from waning. Their music evokes the careful chaos of Crystal Castles and the disoriented expressions of Alt-J‘s Thom Greene. They’ve only showcased a few songs, but from what I can tell, they’re moving in a choice direction.

Lane 8 | Soundcloud

Almost exactly a year ago we asked Lane 8 to open for our first show featuring SHOOK in LA for the modest cost of transportation from SF. Since then Daniel has been consistently improving his production abilities and garnering attention from Anjunabeats to world renowned house label French Express. Let that be a testament to hard work and persistence! With no sign of slowing down, Daniel recently released one of my favorite songs of his to date, “How I Feel.” Using the borderline overused sample of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” in a freshly unique way, he crafts a beat that drives the legendary vocals. Keep your eyes peeled on this dude.

Blackedout | Soundcloud

Blackedout makes me think of the “one too many” bong-rip after a night of drinking. Melting into the couch. Drifting into never land. Contemplating on whether or not the last few shots were even worth it. As always is the case, probably not. But then you have this jam. Just let it take over and lay you to sleep in peace. It’s so dreamy. Thankfully Blackedout has it up for free download. Check this and his other winter vibe tracks on his soundcloud. His self-titled EP is downloadable free here.
