Crystal Fighters | Cave Rave | Tickets for LA 6/4

Folktronica phenoms Crystal Fighters’ follow up to Star of Love made its way to the masses last week. Since their first album came out in 2010, there had been little word of new material until the latter end of 2012, when they released their collaboration with Feed Me titled ‘Love is All I Got’. The sextet addressed their recess as a means of finding the roots of their sound amidst the drudgery of popular music. We’ll give that to them.

Cave Rave comes to us as a call to ‘the freedom of utopic spaces’. Thematically, the album progresses like an exotic fete filled with love, laughter, and smiles – the best of life, music, and people. Lively beats mixed in with catchy guitar riffs make for perfect celebration music no matter your aural preferences. Album opener ‘Wave’ is a triumphant cry to the universe and togetherness; it brings to mind Arcade Fire. The rising cheer continues until ‘Bridge of Bones’ where the tempo calms for a state of reflection – call this the sunset. ‘Are We One’ culminates as the most electro infused track, which fits perfectly with the sentiments that we are all one energy. It is nigh upon bizarre to consider frowning or resisting movement while listening to Cave Rave.

LA Residents, don’t miss their June 4th show at the El Rey Theatre. They play with CAD approved Australians: ALPINE. Buy your tickets here and enjoy a slice of utopia with us!

The other day I randomly found myself wondering what the hell happened to electronic-punk outfit Does It Offend You, Yeah? who, as far as I knew, hadn’t released anything since their 2008 debut. They fell off the map for a bit and I let myself forget about them. Turns out, they released a followup last year, and I’m glad I stumbled across it. If words could describe this album it would be: “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Simply put, the album is organized chaos, crammed into 11 hard-hitting, dizzyingly catchy indie-electro tracks. It successfully blends indie-rock with dance-pop-noise and so much more. Though they manage to hold onto their original charm, the three years off clearly did them some good. It’s massively entertaining. Enjoy.

Tracklist

1. We Are the Dead
2. John Hurt

Feed Me having a brand of cigarettes would be pretty fitting. I liken listening to the array of sounds the little fucker puts together to something similar to smoking a cigarette. Gotta inhale deep (pay close attention) to get the full effect of the nicotine (understand the genius). Hits hard in all the key body parts – lungs/nervous system/heart/brain. And first timers would find themselves struggling for breath. He and Gemini produced a winner here. If you were to blend senses, this track is kinda sweet, kinda sour – like auditory watermelon sour patch kids. I don’t really know how to explain that. The ‘drop’ is some rhythmic filth. This is off his new EP, out February 6th. He’s about to head out on tour with his Teeth set which is massive – check out a video of it and the check the tour dates after the jump.

Big Gigantic just released Nocturnal, the latest in their series of free albums. Producer/saxaphone player Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken come together to produce a medley of groove that lays sexy synths on top of thick beats with an unmistakeable soulful sax. Listening to this album is its own experience, with tastes of electronic, dubstep, hip-hop, and jazz sprinkled throughout. The sax really adds such a unique element – it helps the music speak in ways that most electronic music can’t. Gotta love ingenuitive producers… never thought brass, bass, bleeps, and bloops could come together so harmoniously; this album just bangs from start to finish. If they’re coming through to your town at any point (check) in the near future don’t fuck up and miss it. Still haven’t gotten to see them but the live performance videos speak for themselves (see below).

Every so often, a combination of distortion and sing-a-long goodness comes along that rocks your soul. Mau5trap’s little gremlin Feed Me just released a cover/remix of Two Door Cinema Club‘s “What You Know,” and it’s quite a sexy combination of styles.

The w0bblin’ Jack Beats are back sending their love from the UK in the form of a new original track. Their last release, a remix of Beyonce’s ‘Countdown,’ left me pretty disappointed, which I’m not accustomed to dealing with when it comes to them. This track thumps though, with a little rougher sound than their usual wob. They’ll be supporting Fatboy Slim for a few days in the UK in December so keep an eye out for that if you’re on that side of the pond. The End of Love EP drops December 5th with some added remix action.
