The masked crusaders have been getting quite a lot of talk recently with TRON: Legacy dropping in less than a month. “Who are these guys? What’s their deal? They only have that one good song… “Harder, Stronger, Whatever” with Kanye, right?” Wrong. These guys paved the road for over a decade of electro producers before anyone even knew you could bring back da funk through some wires and a computer. Daft Punk, comprised of Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel De Homem Christo, have become gods in the industry, the epitome of “right.” Never questioned. They make monumental moves before anyone would even consider them options: LED hats, massive light up pyramid, filth, funk, you name it. The release of their Alive 2007 album, live recording of their tour that year, was their last say in the direction they wanted the genre to take. All the while, raising the bar to an almost unattainable level for a live performance. I HIGHLY recommend you check out the video of it titled “Alive 2007,” appropriately. Fingers still crossed for a 2011 tour.

**FUN FACT!

Before Daft Punk was Daft Punk, they were a Beach Boys tribute band called Darlin’. It was Thomas, Guy, and another dude you might have heard of named Laurent Brancowitz. In a review, an author called it “a bunch of daft punk.” Thomas and Guy took that alias and created Daft Punk in 1993, while Lauren peaced out and became the guitarist of Phoenix. Small fuckin’ world…err France, I guess. Check the vid:

Party people! It’s that time of the year again. It comes around 2-4 times a year, depending on how old you are, how smart you are, and whether or not you care about your life: finals week. Although I should have my nose pressed in the books, I’m spending my time scouring the depths of the internet for music to study to. I got you guys set up for this week. Along with the weekly list, I thought I’d add some essential mixes to help you guys with your studies. Leave all doubt out of your minds and get those A’s! We can celebrate this friday at Control Avalon with Treasure Fingers and Burns on the decks, or next Friday at the same place for AC Slater! Check the Upcoming Events page for links to buy tickets and more info. Use these tunes to your advantage and good luck on whatever subject The Man sends your way.

I nearly collapsed from excitement when I caught first word that the god of freestyle turntables released another remix. If you have heard any of his previous releases, you know the magnitude of an event such as this. A-Trak‘s resume speaks for itself:

-Won the DMCs World DJ Championship in 1997 at the age of 15 (youngest ever)
-Kanye West’s former DJ
-Half of DJ disco duo: Duck Sauce

He continues to play at events throwing down songs across all music genres. His music tastes rivals some of the greatest out there, which shows in the songs he chooses to re-edit. Some compared his most recent remix to “Heads Will Roll,” and although it’s classic A-Trak, I’m afraid it’s going to take a lot more to top. Get his complete mixtape “Dirty South Dance 2” for free off his website

Delightful Treats

Robyn – Indestructible (A-Trak Radio Edit)
**Featured on YOLO19
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)
**Delightful choice!
Boys Noize – Oh! (A-Trak Remix)
**Takes a classic and turns it into an anthem.
A-Trak – Ray Ban Vision
**There’s no chord he can’t strike.

It wasn’t until last week when the true greatness of this track made its way through my sub woofer. Jack Beats signature wobble and general domination in the remix scene has always kept them at the top of my list. The best remixes are the ones that showcase the remixers sound while maintaining the original songs vibe. Jack Beats continues to do just that with all of their remixes. The song starts off with the hopeful vocals we’ve all learned to love so much and drops into the depths of the grimiest of bass and wobbles that Jack Beats never leaves us without. Truly looking forward to seeing them again at TAO.

Let the bass of these songs ripple your review mirrors..drive safe!

A recent wave in the world of Indie has washed ashore a new subgenre of lo-fi synth acid pop—music that sounds like it was recorded in an ‘80s dream, placed in a time capsule, buried and rediscovered decades later. Neon Indian is such a band, making its debut with Psychic Chasms. All you need to know about the album is in its title—it’s the lo-fi kid brother of MGMT and Cut Copy catapulted to the ‘80s, flashing lights, poufy hair and all. Psychedelic as it is, Neon Indian fits right into the easy-breezy-summer-day soundtrack along with Panda Bear, Washed Out and Wavves.

The album flexes its muscles of range with poppy electro-funk beats and lazy ether-infused tracks reminiscent of a sepia toned day at the beach. Amidst subdued vocals and soft keyboards, the album’s single opener “Deadbeat Summer” is somehow suggestive of a Passion Pit daydream.

The album is catchy in its confusion with lazy, repetitive lyrics set against a psychedelic beat in songs like “Should Have Taken Acid With You” (a track compelling in its title alone) and “6669 (I Don’t Know If You Know).” Perhaps the zenith of the album, “Mind, Drips” is a synthtastic retro-pop jam that, like the album’s namesake track, pulls from the best of the ‘80s.

Psychic Chasms, with its general sluggishness, provides the perfect soundtrack for a lazy day.

Pretty Lights @ Wiltern

The Wiltern was the place to be on Friday as Pretty Lights took a stand in front of a sold out Los Angeles crowd. I had two missed opportunities to see this guy, so I made up for lost time front and center with Chronic Mncher and friends. The performance definitely rivaled some of the greatest I’ve ever been a part of. There’s something about live drummers and electronic music that changes everything, in a good way. Chali 2na (pictured) of Jurassic 5 guest MC’d and brought the crowd together in a whole new way. Pretty Lights was a perfect hybrid of heavy hip hop beats entangled with nasty dubstep and vintage soul samples. Nothing compares to a two hour set and a thirty minute encore. I love getting my money’s worth.

ALL of Pretty Lights‘ music is available for download on his website for free. He just asks for any donation, so help him out if you can. My favorite so far is “Passing By Behind Your Eyes.” They’re all good, but this one is most consistent as an album. Time to flood your library with new music:
