Holy Ghost | Preorder on iTunes | PHOTOS

James Murphy’s DFA Records (home of The Rapture, Hot Chip, Yacht, and more) have been releasing some of the most cutting edge music of our generation. Holy Ghost is no exception. This style, to me, is the future. Bringing in all aspects of what makes electronic music so great, but maintaining all the live elements of the classic “rock band” image. It’s quite a spectacle in concert. Drums everywhere. Pianos. Guitars. A wall of analog synths and keyboards.

The guys are finally set to release the followup to their self-titled album on September 10. Dubbed Dynamics, I’m sure we can expect to see a more refined and maturely evolved version of their debut. You’ll find two mighty fine examples below. ‘Dumb Disco Ideas,’ a funky treat, leaked a few weeks back and it showcases the band’s energetic and playful side (check the cowbell). While ‘Okay’ illustrates the emotion harbored behind their sounds. Seems like it has a ton of live concert value towards the end as well. Peep the tracklist and more songs after the jump.

Crosstown Rebels | Hot Creations | Limited Tickets

It looks like Saturday in LA is going to be the house mecca at the Egyptian Theater. While most people will be breathing in pounds of dirt at the state historic park for FYF Fest (I’m only being a little bitter), the deep house heads of Southern California will be flocking to this party. Damian Lazarus, head of Crosstown Rebels, wanted to do the 10 year anniversary of Get Lost LA right. With this all star lineup of gods in their own realm, you can plan for a day PACKED with bass, hi-hats, and soulful rhythm. I’ve included several mixes below for you to get a taste, but the real deal will go from 2PM-10PM all day and followed by an afterparty with Jamie Jones at Create nightclub. With each artists set to spin 1.5-2 hour sets minimum, the following is only the tip of the iceberg. Check the mixes after the jump.

Lightning In A Bottle | The Do Lab | Complete Photo Album

Music festivals have found themselves in a surge previously thought unimaginable. What was once “one rave here” or “one Coachella there” has turned into “Festival Season” and “Festival Season Leading to Festival Season.” There are relatively countless events to attend of all shapes and sizes. Now that people are succumbing to what truly makes a festival special, experiences are more easily shaped towards the fan’s wants and needs. There is now a fourth dimension: vibes. This is coming from someone who has been to almost every West Coast festival on multiple occasions for the past half decade; Lightning In A Bottle is of another realm. Check after the jump for pictures and more!

Today is the first Sunday in 3 weeks that I’m not at a music festival. The yearly early-August-festival-binge (HARD Summer/Outside Lands) is over for me. I could use the rest. I’m becoming an old man! Just kidding. I’m 23. I hate when people say that when they’re young. BRING IT ON LIFE! Enjoy #2

Portugal. The Man | Terry Urban

It’s nice to see a band you saw grow from such eclectic beginnings to getting well deserved radio time. What more comes with success is worthwhile collaborations. This special remixtape tape was done by Terry Urban of New York City. Known for his hip hop remixes and mashups, this release brings classic hip hop verses back to life on the work of one of the indie world’s premier bands. Best part, it’s a FREE download! Listen to and download the entire mixtape here. I included my two favorite below.

My skepticism of Spotify was very much worth overcoming. I always took pride in the organization and vastness of my mp3 library. So much so that I didn’t even consider tarnishing my progress with some sort of online music streaming service; until recently. As space continued to be a growing issue (heh), I considered giving the behemoth a try. A month for free? Why not.. As I discovered, the pros very much outweigh the cons. Pros including: having nearly everything released commercially at your fingertips. Need I say more? It’s damn convenient! Cons: you need service or a general connection for it to operate. If you use it as a means to sample music and see if you like it before you download it, a lot of good can be done. Anyhow, I didn’t want this to be a Spotify lecture, but now at least you know it’s worth a shot if you haven’t made the leap. It is the future.

For those who have been with us for long enough, you’d know I used to do these weekly playlists called “YOLO Lists.” That was until Drake made “YOLO” a weird thing, and I was forced to change the name to “New & Timeless.” After 111 consistent weeks and persistent server/space issues, I opted out. The aim of the playlists was to get people out of their comfort zone and expose them to new, different music from the best of the best each genre has to offer. “Life isn’t too short, but too dear to be confined to any one genre of music, or to any one way of life for that matter. There is something worth listening in every genre, even country. Open your mind and your ears and give it a shot. You never know..” Hopefully its legacy lives on with Spotify Sundays. Listen below or open in Spotify.
