I was thinking a lot about all that hubub James Blake made over american bro/dub/fratstep and it really bummed me out. Partly because of the fact that internet music gossip actually bummed me out, but mainly because of realizing that even respected musicians go out of their way to put down other genres. I’ve always felt that it isn’t fair to hate on music you don’t understand. Maybe because I used to be really into hardcore music, which was really easy for people to hate on. Yet I loved the stuff! As lame it sounds, the music is making someone happy somewhere. Whether you get it or not, bite your tongue so you don’t look like a fool when it starts making sense for you!
What I wrote when I started the YOLO lists still holds true: Life isn’t too short, but too dear to be confined to any one genre of music, or to any one way of life for that matter. There is something worth listening in every genre, even country! Open your minds and your ears and give it a shot. You never know.
