Mau5trap’s shining star Jon Gooch (the 17 year old me has been withholding immature jokes on the inside) aka Feed Me just released his third official project, the Escape from Electric Mountain EP. The two tracks that leaked in the past week helped build an already high level of excitement, like receiving dirty texts the night before reuniting with a long distance girlfriend. The little guy shows off some range with the six songs, proving that it’s tough to confine artists to any one genre anymore.
“Trapdoor” combines some alt-rock vocals courtesy of Hadouken with a dubstep drop. “One Click Headshot” packs as much energy and bass as you can fit into 4:47 with the moombah/jump-up epidemic that Skrillex & Knife Party have spread. (That sample comes from here). “Whiskers,” a track co-produced with Gemini is a full fledged banger. “Relocation” threw me off guard in the best way possible — a progressive, softer electronic song with pleasant melodies and a thick distorted bassline. I sense some mau5 influence. And if you’ve dug his previous incorporation of powerful vocals, he brings along a mysterious and talented ‘Lindsay’ on “Embers,” a more traditional electro house track. His precision in production is apparent – every effect (and there’s a lot) is so crisp and the bass never fails to hits home.
Grab the EP on Beatport and if you don’t have the $15 hit me on Twitter and I’ll try to point you in the right direction. This bad boy’s my favorite release thus far in 2012. If I ever make it to electric mountain, I’m never leavin’.
