It’s going to be tough to put into words how refreshing it was to be at Dim Mak Tuesdays this past week. But we’re here for you guys’ and I’d be damned if we didn’t try! Here goes…
After making our way in through the atrocity that was the “line” to get in (and I use quotes because lines are supposed to move), we were welcomed with none other than Mr. Paul Chambers on the decks. To say he was having his way with the crowd would be an understatement. It was much more than that. The bass rattled the walls and had our hairs standing on end, and we can thank the top of the line Funktion One speakers for this. He dropped track after track of new and unheard of techno bangers that had the whole crowd on a lightspeed journey through the galaxy! I know it sounds weird, but you’d understand if you were there. I had heard myths…LEGENDS of the sheer capacity of his sets, and I can now tell you that no words could put it nearly into perspective. As far as showmanship, track selection…AWESOMENESS! Few compare to Paul. Go see him!

Next up was a guy fairly unfamiliar to me. The name is hard to forget and I had seen it around, especially in the Dim Mak newsletters but never had listened. It’s safe to say this guy sits comfortably in the Rave Music Crew, because his shit was on another level. Packed with bass and a style I wasn’t used to but absolutely loved! It was his EP release party, and a party it was! Steve Aoki and Peace Treaty made it onto the decks to share the moment with him, and the crowd responded well! To answer your question…yes. Steve brought the champagne, but the music gods were with us and he did NOT spray it all over the place. Got to avoid the stickiness. I suppose he was keeping his venue clean, but hell, the dude can throw a party.
To wrap it up…just wanted to make clear what I meant by refreshing. DJ sets aren’t hard to come by nowadays in Southern California, as the music has made its way into the libraries of many. Going to show after show, it dulls it down to hear the same tracks played by different people. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of the tracks I hear often. But it’s just refreshing to get a set filled with songs we can’t name. New songs on the rise. Songs that show the DJ is taking a risk and pulling it off! That is the shit that makes a difference, and that is precisely what we got on Tuesday.
