the colour

It’s called “classic” rock for a reason. There’s something fundamental that generations of listeners can all identify with and a pure sound that can be appreciated no matter the decade—and it’s made it this far for a reason. Los Angeles rockers The Colour possess that timeless edge that might confuse them with early rock classics like The Rolling Stones, The Smiths or The Clash, meanwhile busting the eardrums of today’s Arctic Monkeys listening youth with its Anglo-inspired qualities. The Colour is one those undeniably awesome, consistently brilliant bands you can rock out to anytime of the year, no matter the current musical trends. And you can expect to be listening to it for a long time.

After releasing an EP in 2006, The Colour graced the world with its first full-length album Between Earth and Sky in 2007. Four years on the market, this album is anything but old; in fact, it only gets better with age. It’s got the same retro-rock appeal of contemporaries Razorlight and Wolfmother with hefty guitar lines backed by piano. While these guys obviously did their classic rock homework, what drives them isn’t solely their throwback appeal but rather frontman Wyatt Hull’s emotion-infused vocals.

The album commands respect in a way that most indie rock bands today fail to, attributable to the band’s complete well-roundedness. It’s rhythmically addicting, vocally strong and lyrically smart. Not only do they manage to capture a sound lost over the decades, but they do it while somehow remaining relevant to the times. There is no point in locating the best songs of the album because any track would be difficult to argue with. With vocals that clearly distinguish them from every other ‘70s cover band and rhythms that will literally stay in your head all day (case in point: “Save Yourself”) The Colour is not a band you want to miss out on—it’s never too late to become a fan.

Party people. It’s always good to be back here with these playlists. I was worried for a second that it’d be harder to make these lists as the weeks went by, wrong. Every time I’m shuffling through my library, I stumble upon another song or artist I feel you guys should be listening to. I hope you guys are using these lists to help guide you in the direction of finding new music. I’m just trying to make it easier. Use Last.fm to help you find related music and just go from there. Last.fm is probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me music-wise. When you sign up for it, it gives you this program that goes through your iTunes and sees what and how much of what you’ve been listening to and gives you recommendations depending on that. Plus, the artist bios and the most popular song lists are very helpful. Anyway, the list is all ready for you below. Try and leave a comment of your thoughts on the list if you can. I love hearing that you guys are enjoying these.

Gifted – N.A.S.A.
N.A.S.A. (North America South America) is a DJ duo who have collaborations of songs with artists from a wide spectrum of musical backgrounds. This song in particular features Kanye West, Santigold and Lykke Li. “Gifted” is another one of those songs that has numerous remixes, many of which that rival the original. The first time I ever heard it was the Treasure Fingers remix. Leave it to Treasure Fingers and The Twelves to take a choice song and turn it into a disco’d out party. His remix is definitely my favorite rendition of the original. I just heard the Masuka remix the other night. Instant hit for any bass head. As I’ve said before, I’m really particular about dubstep. It either hits home or is garbage, to me. This song is definitely one of the better dubstep remixes that I’ve heard. Ya’ll mutha fuckas know who dis is.

Artist: Fake Blood

Fake Blood is one of those DJs who constantly delivers. “Mars” put him on the map last year as it made its way onto any experienced DJs set. His songs always hit hard as fuck, and he kills it live. I saw him at HARD 13 in March with Jack Beats and Boy 8 Bit. He also released an essential mix that ended up being the fifth best of the year. Make sure to look him up and remember his songs, because you can bet you’ll be hearing them at an electronic show. He’s going to be at HARD Haunted Mansion on Saturday. So, if you DO go that day, be sure to see him. You won’t be disappointed.

Fake Blood Essential Mix

Artist: Cheetahsaurus
If you’ve been following these lists, you probably remember me talking about one of my favorite bands that broke up called The Colour. I don’t want to get into how sad I am, still, that they broke up, so I won’t. Of their band members, the lead singer Wyatt Hull went to this band, Cheetahsaurus. It’s nice to hear his voice, because it was one of the best parts of The Colour, but it’s definitely not the same. These guys still have a lot of soul, and the song is pretty catchy. As far as I know, they’ve only released one album that was decent at best. The remaining members of The Colour went to a different band, that seems to be doing better, called We Barbarians. Both are still great indie rock bands, but they’ll never really compare to The Colour.

Giving another week it’s own playlist..

Good morning! Had to churn this one out post Audiotistic, because I don’t know if I’m going to have time to do it later. Have a final Monday…every minute of studying I didn’t do and that I’ll never get back was 100% worth it. Audiotistic was everything and more. I’ll have videos and my favorites from the night on the next post. (Don’t worry, by the way, I’ll handle this test. It’s all about balance!)

So I didn’t get much of a response from the last one, but I’m going to assume that you all loved it, because I do! I’m planning on keeping them at two songs at most per artist, so I can show you as many as possible as the weeks go by. Look into the artists you like, and feel free to let me know if you need more guidance. I tried to keep it random as fuck again, so expect to hear something new. These have been really fun to make so far. Keep me posted on who stood out or what genre you want more of, and I’ll keep that in mind for future YOLO Lists.

ALSO! As you’re listening to these lists, if you feel as though I might enjoy a band you like, please tell me in the comments or email me! I have an ever-expanding desire for new music, and if I put it up here, you’ll get your credit for sure.

Miike Snow – Animal (Punks Jump Up Remix)
Miike Snow is definitely one of the better bands out there right now. All around, too..they were absolutely beautiful at Coachella. This is one of those songs that all the remixes are way better, but the original is still amazing. This one imparticular has a grip of remixes, but the Punks Jump Up mix will always stand out to me.

Artist: The Colour
The Colour…it feels like I’ve been listening to them forever. They used to throw flyers around my highschool, and I went to see them because the flyer looked cool. They were local, got really big, made an amazing album called “Between Earth & Sky”, traveled Europe, then broke up. Band conflicts are a damn shame..Regardless, this shit has been “go to” for me for all my music life. Todays Rolling Stones? ..or yesterdays I guess

Artist: Starfucker
Don’t let the name fool you!

Artist: Discovery
This is a side project of Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot’s Wes Miles. Considering I love Vampire Weekend and think Ra Ra Riot’s aiite, I thought I’d give it a shot. It’s got this weird R&B thing going on, that’s kinda funny, considering it’s these two white guys. Somehow they pull it off though..

Your week just got it’s own playlist!

all these tracks are for promotional purposes only and if you want them removed email contactalijafari@gmail.com
