By now, I’ve come to give Pretty Lights my blind trust when it comes to his record label. I downloaded Break Science‘s EP a couple months ago and just got around to listening to it. I’m pretty upset with that decision the same way I’m upset at how long it took me to find out how delicious Gin & Tonics are. Further Than Our Eyes Can See features six tracks of amazing production from what you’ve come to expect of a PLM artist. Break Science’s style matches thick basslines and romping w0b with heavily hip-hop influenced drums. The instrumentals alone would be enough to get me thrashing my head to and fro, but he goes and recruits Talib Kweli, CX, and The Dry High Crew (admittedly this is the first I’ve heard of the latter two but they both work well on the tracks). The lyricism over the tunes is like getting a ZJ and then an 8 oz. filet afterwards. Shucks, you really didn’t have to. Keep an eye out for more and get the whole EP or you will regret it.

Third video from Kendrick off Section.80 and it’s the complete opposite on the greatness scale of Hiii PoWer. This seems like the lowest budget video. Still a great song though, looking forward to what he does with Rigamortus next.

Any Little Brother fans out there? Hearing Phonte and 9th Wonder on a track again is pretty dope. This is the first track released off of Phonte’s upcoming solo album, Charity Starts At Home and features Elzhi. Don’t sleep on this, I got a really good feeling about this album, which drops 9/27.

Caught Casey Veggies, Schoolboy Q, and Kendrick Lamar at The Music Box last Friday — second time I’ve got to see him but first time solo w/o the rest of Black Hippy. What a night. Dream Urban should’ve given Kendrick a trojan before he fucked our minds. A historic night for hip-hop and the West Coast. The Music Box has the best sound system I’ve heard from a venue that size, I literally was knocked back at every bass kick. I kinda want to catch even average artists in the future there just for the system. Kendrick played all the hits, brought out Snoop, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Game, and Big Sean came out and played “I Do It.” The crowd kept murmuring as they looked up to see Snoop and Dre sitting up on the balcony next to each other. The show ended with an emotional moment between everyone on stage and a metaphorical passing of the torch from Game and Snoop (who the fuck gave Game the torch ?) and some moisture from Kendrick… that went straight into Hii PoWeR. I’m struggling to put how crazy this show was into words, watch this video to understand what I’m trying to say:

To top it off I turned 21 at midnight and afterwards got to say whatup to Ab-Soul, Talib, and got in a pic with Kendrick. Yes.

Nero with a new track? It seems like just last week they melted my brain into goo with Welcome Reality. Oh wait. Here they take Sebastian & M.I.A.’s already good “C.T.F.O.” and lay some grime on it. You’re gonna want to do anything but Chill The Fuck Out after hearing this. Enjoy.

Wale dropped The Eleven One Eleven Theory a couple days ago, the precursor to his upcoming album Ambition. Wale is the only man who seems to be working as hard as Curren$y (scratch that, I’m pretty sure Curren$y’s put out 6 tapes since Weekend at Burnie’s). I haven’t really given Wale a listen since he signed with Maybach Music Group; I was wet on 100 Miles and Running when I first heard it a couple years ago but his style started to get played out. After a while the metaphors and wordplay seemed forced. Wale gets really lyrical with this tape though, beginning with a pretty sick spoken word and not letting up from there. I’m still unsure about his ability to make a commercially viable album, but if he keeps making music like this I’ll keep appreciating.
