Durante

Skrillex’s OWSLA has been putting out a slew of new sounds on quite a consistent basis. Durante, an intern at the label, seems to have been soaking it all up. His debut EP Challenger is a deep, funk-filled and groovy record that’s perfect for an extended car drive or a night out. The OWSLA intern manages to showcase a variety of genres on this four track EP. The fact that he was able to nail sounds across the board is incredibly impressive. Whether it be deep house, electro or something really funky, he manages to make each song unique. Durante recently hit 1,000 likes on his Facebook page and released a VIP remix of “Radio,” a song off of Challenger. If the kid keeps it up, we can safely assume he’ll make it big in no time.

What So Not | Buy ‘The Quack’

What So Not have finally released their new ‘Quack EP’ via Skrillex’s OWSLA label. The duo (comprised of Sydney natives Flume and Emoh Instead) are no strangers to the electronic playground. Flume is currently blowing up in both his home country and America with his eponymous debut album, and Emoh is constantly remixing big names and gaining traction in his own right. With this release, the duo have created a bass heavy EP of ‘club dubs’.

The A-side “The Quack” is a thunderous trap banger that’s sure to get everybody bouncing, yet it retains that signature strange What So Not sound of 808s and peculiar synths. The B-side “High You Are” is a song that the two described as an experiment of pushing groove based house to the limit. “We wanted something that could hold its own, against the biggest ‘EDM’ hit, without compromising the feel & soul. The power to make people move, not just fist pump.” It’s definitely safe to say they succeeded and boy is it refreshing.

The Wombats are an indie pop rock trio out of Liverpool. They took the music industry by storm when their 2007 debut album The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation went platinum. Since then they have released a few EPs and returned with their sophomore album, The Wombats Proudly Present: Modern Glitch in 2010. The energy and catchiness of their tunes cannot be understated in a live setting. If you’re all stoked on seeing Two Door Cinema Club and want to catch an artist that’s a little bit similar, you should be sure to check them out. Despite a lack of new material, they’re definitely an act that has all the artillery to put on one of the more memorable sets of the weekend.

Earl Sweatshirt (of Odd Future) is set to perform solo at Coachella this year. The 19 year old was sent to boarding school in Samoa during Odd Future’s swift rise to fame and unable to perform with them during their Coachella debut in 2011. He released his first album EARL in 2010 at the tender age of 17. Before being sent away, Earl was a fan favorite within the group along with Tyler, The Creator. Both he and Tyler have become somewhat notorious for the violent acts they describe in their songs.

Earl has returned and recorded his next album Doris, which is set to be released this spring. He has since released two singles “Chum” and “Whoa.” They couldn’t be more different thematically, lyrically or musically at all. That variance, for me, is much appreciated. It’s really nice to see Earl showcase his talents as a writer. Opposed to him painting himself into a corner with Odd Future. With the possibility of special guests being at a high, you can guarantee I’ll be there on Friday.

Allow me to introduce Parov Stelar; a very unique Austrian Producer and DJ. He’s one of the many electronic artists who are currently reviving big band and swing music. I couldn’t be happier with this movement! Parov is credited with the creation of the Electroswing genre. You can’t help but feel that this is swing music for the 21st century, complete with all the trumpets, synthesizer, saxophone, and bass you’d ever need for the new age. The best part is that he’ll be touring with his live trio. Meaning that there will be live instruments! You’re almost guaranteed to nod your head, tap your foot and just groove out to these tunes. Consider adding him to your Coachooser for Sunday.

Skrillex and Boys Noize are sharing the stage at Coachella this year? I must be dreaming. But I’m not, Dog Blood is real. What is Dog Blood? Dog Blood is the new collaboration between the aforementioned electronic music heavyweights. This project is truly unique in that each has such a defined sound within a different genre…The collab seems out of left field. Dog Blood released their Middle Finger EP in August featuring two songs: Next Order and Middle Finger. Surprisingly, they decided to go a heavier house route with the sound. This is despite the usual dubstep and intricate techno we’ve come to know from the respective artists. I think it’s fair to say that the super group that is Dog Blood will ignite the Sahara tent with a fresh twist of two different backgrounds. Check after the jump for the full scoop on this project.
