The 12s vs. Fleet Foxes

If you’ve been following this blog at all, you know that my love for The Twelves extends beyond the furthest reaches of any distance explored by man. They have a way of putting together their remixes with levels of funk that is so consistently unparalleled that it’s almost unreal. How do they do it? The songs they choose to remix range from pop classics like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to indie favorites like La Roux’s “In For the Kill” or even Radiohead’s “Reckoner.” All with their original style. All great. All necessary.

I nearly lost it all when I heard that they even went as far as to remix Fleet Foxes in their essential mix. When I think about Fleet Foxes, I think about how I missed TRV$DJAM to see them at Coachella two years ago. I don’t like to regret things, but the TRV$DJAM live recording isn’t making it any easier. Although, Fleet Foxes did play the set of their life and I was really into them at the time…I just wish DJAM didn’t have to go and eat a suicidal amount of drugs. Fleet Foxes played to the most beautiful backdrop though, I’ll never forget:

ALSO! I just hit the jackpot. I found a site with 5 downloadable The Twelves mixtapes + tracklisting!! CLICK HERE to pick those up.

It all started with a YouTube video — no no no, wait…it all started with a tweet! Coachella turned into a hype machine and began teasing us just past the point of blue balls. After the tweet where they said the real lineup will leak before Goldenvoice presents it on their website, the hints started pouring out in the form of videos on Coachella.com.

The first of these videos was of Phantogram‘s “Mouthful of Diamonds.” Needless to say, I was hooked right when the heavy electronic beat dropped. Bobbing my head to the catchy intro, I was gifted with the following guitar riff from the indie gods. When I thought I was right where I needed to be, when all problems and complaints with the world were lost in the moment of the beginning of this song, Sarah Barthel had to come in with her angel like voice and bring everything together. After hearing this track, I was inclined to commence on a quest to try and find their whole album, Eyelid Movies, in the highest quality possible. After doing my routine album run through, I was devastated to find that no track got even close to the effect and emotion I gathered from “Mouthful of Diamonds,” so I just got rid of it. It may be a one hit wonder, but it’s definitely necessary for anyone who appreciates that oh-so-approachable XX (indie/electronic) style.

It’s not often you come across a band with the same effect or level of straight epicness as Arcade Fire. Birthed out of Montreal, Arcade Fire is filled to the brim with seven members: two of whom are husband and wife (which lead the group) and the husband’s brother. A true family affair of talent and passion. The instruments they use consist of the guitar, drums, bass guitar, piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, xylophone, glockenspiel, keyboard, French horn, accordion, harp, mandolin and hurdy-gurdy.

Damn, I gotta let that soak in for a minute…another thing is, they are all multi-instrumentalist. So they play whatever they want whenever they want, and sing! Their debut album Funeral definitely ranks among my favorite albums of all time. From beginning to finish it’s probably the most well put together piece in my collection. It has the “conceptual album” feel where you need to listen to the whole thing through to get the full effect, but each track is an individual masterpiece. I’m just hoping that they actually make it on the Coachella bill, because I feel like their live show would be more than just a concert. I feel like it would be a display where music meets theater, but not so much as a musical. I have to be a part of it one of these days.

This past week is getting me excited as fuck for the very near future. I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel that is my good health, but there’s more: Wobbleland is less than a week away, The Twelves in three, and much more importantly, Coachella is starting to give us hints to the long, anticipated lineup that’s supposed to come out this week. Some were saying Wednesday, but I know for sure it’s going to be released or talked about on KROQ on Tuesday at 5PM. Get ready to tune in! The hints I’m taking about are these:

1. Coachella’s twitter said that the real lineup will be leaked before it’s on the actual Coachella website. I still said I wouldn’t believe any flyer that wasn’t somewhere credible. I just don’t want any unwarranted excitedness. Is that a word? Anyway, one of these awesome flyers are going to be real! But what is important is hint #2.

2. They’ve been switching up the main video on Coachella‘s website to bands that are confirmed. So you can try and search for the bands on the “fake” flyers to see how likely it is that it’s real. Two of the videos I saw were of Tame Impala (video) and Phantogram. I loved the Phantogram song so much that I had to put it on this week’s list. Can’t.stop.playing. Now it’s this weird ass video with Gumby, see for yourself before it changes.

Yeah…gettin’ kinda crazy/antsy/feisty/horny. It’s almost here though, so let these tracks hold you off ’til it’s out.

In the world of French/Disco House, the name Cassius is synonymous with that of Daft Punk and Stardust. They’ve been in the game since the late 80s and early 90s. A time where America wasn’t ready for such uplifting and soulful beats, where French House was making its way through the European borders and onward through the rest of the galaxy. Daft Punk in the cockpit and Cassius manning the lasers. My appreciation began when I saw them perform with Busy P, Justice, and DJ Mehdi at Coachella as the supergroup: Club 75. (Crazy good stuff. Highly recommend seeing them if they’re around.)

Later that year they released The Rawkers EP under Busy P’s Ed Banger Records. Overall I’d give that EP a 7, but with tracks like “I Love U So” you can see they haven’t lost it. OH! They’ve also helped produce tracks for Phoenix, Chromeo, and Cut Copy and if that doesn’t do it for ya then what are you doing here!

Dudes/Dudettes, it’s my pleasure to bring you this week’s YOLO list. Although school has started for most and is about to begin for the rest, the weather is finally clearing up, and I just so happened to stumble upon some necessary tracks and leaked albums. I’ve been all about disco house and alternative in recent years, so I’m happy to say the music gods worked in my favor the past few days. Let me know if ya with me.

Alright, I’m back. I know I’ve been lagging harder than ever, but I put my body to the test NYE weekend in Vegas and the disastrously, unorganized event that was Together As One. And now, I’m paying the price. Every sneeze, runny nose, and minute of sleep I lost and won’t get back was and will forever be worth every moment of it. The 4 hours I DID manage to get in at the main stage continues to haunt my dreams. I only wish I could have seen more people. Dada Life, Laidback, Luke, and Wolfgang…thank you. They brought their fuckin’ A games and it showed. No bullshit will call lines will ever take that away from us. Anyway, sorry again for taking forever, but here’s numba twenny fo’
