Skinny Genes

Alright people get ready for some smoosh smoosh, because we’re taking the C+A+D train to Jersey Shore. Pomp your hairs and spray your tans, because Louis has made our soundtrack! I feel bad for the people from Jersey. Fake tans and being a douche have become synonymous with the area because of that stupid show. Despite my disdain for the program and how it contributes to MTV’s downfall, Louis La Roche has made a gem of a house track in their honor. Louis has to be one of the most supremely slept on house producers in the game. He pumps out song after song that are to the catchiness level of Duck Sauce or even Daft Punk. This is a funk lovers dream come true and has been racking up a copious amount of plays in my library. I’ve definitely been caught dancing to myself with its tune in my head. Pretty embarrassing. So I apologize ahead of time when you get caught.

Happy Monday people! Especially happy to share this week. Had a nice, steady flow of music. Both old and new. Dived a bit deeper in my library to make this list a solid 10-tuner, as I like to call ’em. I want to leave you with something I was thinking about a lot this week: You can never be as happy as the people who laugh at themselves. Pretty much, just don’t be too hard on yourself. Learn to love who you are on your pursuit to be who you want to be. Turning negatives to positives is a powerful way to live. If you don’t have faith in yourself than how can anyone else? I have faith in you! Enjoy the list:

Seems like electro pop has been in steady flow as of late. Lots of bands are starting to pick up on the indie/electro fusion, which is good news for us. I love this stuff! Very much of a pick-me-up when you need it, and always a helping hand towards the betterment of your day.

First up is the rather fresh sound from Belgian solo artist Expo. Reminiscent of Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours, but with a voice that suggests of a more seductive Jamie XX. He’s only got two tracks out as of now, “Right Here With Me” and “I Don’t Mind.” Both are really strong tracks, but I prefer the former. “Right Here With Me” yearns for a love out of reach, but stays hopeful. The dreamy synths still manage to stay bouncy, and the piano at the end couldn’t have brought it all together more beautifully. You can’t help but sing with the chorus as it takes you to a better place. The guy’s got an EP set to release at the beginning 2012, and he doesn’t have many Facebook fans yet so help him out and spread the word!

And this may be a bit of a nostalgic treat for most of you. I don’t think I could count the amount of minutes that I put into Transatlanticism in my preteen days. That album will forever reserve a special place in my heart for Death Cab for Cutie. In this remix, C+A+D favorites Cut Copy take the funky jam and throw a tribal spin under that oh so familiar voice of Ben Gibbard. Such a trip to so vividly see a band’s transformation through the times as that of Death Cab’s. They seem to have comfortable nestled their way in to today with a remix EP in our horizon titled Keys and Codes. They’ll supposedly be releasing one song a week until the November 22nd release date. This…..I can deal with. Welcome back into our lives Death Cab!

Well I never thought I’d see the day, but here is my first post on the “god of trance” himself: Tiesto. As I’ve said before I don’t like to hate on other music, but in the past I never found a reason to go looking for his stuff. Not sure why. The one thing that seemed to be unanimous about the guy was that his live shows are among nothing else. I missed Tiesto at Coachella ’10 because 2 Many DJ’s were set to rock at the same time and I wasn’t about to miss my boys. My friends said Tiesto’s light show was SO good that they blacked out and don’t remember it. Bit of a hype up huh? I never wanted to go out of my way to see him, but when your openers are Porter Robinson, Dada Life, and Diplo; and your tickets are for $40 after fees; and you’re breaking the record for highest attendance for any single DJ; I’d be a fool to not attend. It was a undoubtedly a damn, memorable night.

What’s up everybody? This past week was a week of firsts, for music and life. Lots of good and bad things happened. What they had in common, though, is that they made me appreciate life even more than before. For one, all of Southern California’s colleges got together for Tiesto’s invasion and a record breaking attendance. It definitely brought the entire show together in a totally different way than usual. Pretty sweet deal. I’ll have my review of the Carson City stop up soon. Meanwhile, I want to make your Monday better with this week’s list. Be happy! It’s as easy as that. YOLO

I was thinking a lot about all that hubub James Blake made over american bro/dub/fratstep and it really bummed me out. Partly because of the fact that internet music gossip actually bummed me out, but mainly because of realizing that even respected musicians go out of their way to put down other genres. I’ve always felt that it isn’t fair to hate on music you don’t understand. Maybe because I used to be really into hardcore music, which was really easy for people to hate on. Yet I loved the stuff! As lame it sounds, the music is making someone happy somewhere. Whether you get it or not, bite your tongue so you don’t look like a fool when it starts making sense for you!

What I wrote when I started the YOLO lists still holds true: Life isn’t too short, but too dear to be confined to any one genre of music, or to any one way of life for that matter. There is something worth listening in every genre, even country! Open your minds and your ears and give it a shot. You never know. Here’s my 63rd attempt at helping you make sense of this vast musical world.
