Illum Sphere | Buy Ghosts of Then and Now

Manchester’s Ryan Hunn, better known as Illum Sphere, presses the boundaries of music in his newest release: Ghosts of Then and Now. It shows him taking a dystopian sci-fi approach to music. The entire album gives off a Bladerunner (‘Sleeprunner’) vibe.

Much as the title [track] suggests, you’ll find allusions to the sounds of old by way of shamanistic tempos and divine chorals rife throughout. Still, an eerie discordance via subtle electronic underpinnings serves to remind us that these are merely industrial representations of a past long gone. The vaporeal vocals of ShadowBox and Mai Nestor drive home that the soul of sound follows in time, no matter how it may change.

We know it’s still the first quarter, but feel free to quote us on saying this album will be among the year’s best. I’m personally hoping for a non-vocal feature (e.g. Inter5tella 5555, but far more neo-noir) to illustrate Ghosts of Then and Now.

Lightning In A Bottle | Rush-N-Get-Em

While we may be new to the family, we know a good thing when we see it. The experience we had at The Do LaB’s 2013 Lightning in a Bottle music and arts festival changed our lives for the better. We didn’t experience the shady authorities first-hand but it appears it was enough for The Do LaB to find a new location for one of our favourite festivals. LIB 2014 will be taking place at the beautiful San Antonio Recreation Area in Bradley, CA.

Yumi Zouma

The romantic and dreamy disco-pop escape that is Yumi Zouma is only augmented by the leafy vocals of Kim Pflaum. This weekend, we’ll find ourselves coasting highways beneath clear skies, a cool breeze skirting through our hair as the sun kisses our bare skin. It seems like way longer than a year and a half since Magnus August Høiberg aka Cashmere Cat stormed the scene with his unique style of bass music with his debut ‘Mirror Maru EP’. Kitty’s managed to stay busy since then, dropping a handful of remixes that found steady rotation from heavy hitters like Hudson Mohawke, Diplo and Baauer. He returns gloriously to a scene that’s become stale and diluted with his ‘Wedding Bells EP’ with layers, instruments, ranges and ambitions suitable for an LP. The blissed out vibes we saw in ‘Mirror Maru’ have become a bit more melancholic and dazed. The dissonance between the heavy 808 style bass and the twinkling melodies creates a contrast that can best be summed up as beautifully eerie weirdness. Cashmere Cat changes up his signature sound to stay fresh on his sophomore EP. Yet, as soon as you fire it up, you’ll appreciate that kitty’s still got you dancing in mind.
