Danny Brown | Buy ‘Old’

Danny Brown came barreling at us with his third LP, OLD, which dropped last Tuesday. The now semi-infamous Detroit MC shows his versatility on the two “sided” album. Danny’s one of those incredibly divisive rappers; not only for his imagery and lyrics but for his voice. If you’re here expecting him to sound different vocally than on any of his other releases, I’ll save you some time here. Side A has Danny rapping about his former life of dealing drugs and struggling to survive in one of America’s most dangerous cities. It also garners some slightly more traditional hip hop beats.

Collaborators on this side include Freddie Gibbs, Schoolboy Q, and a standout track with Purity Ring that truly features both artists at their best while complimenting each other perfectly. The follow up side opens with the aptly named ‘Side B (Dope Song)’, one of the three tracks produced by Rustie on the record. Side B is a straight party album with some seriously club ready bangers. Fool’s Gold head honcho A-Trak also produced a song for his signee, ‘Smokin & Drinkin’ that is sure to please fans of both. A$AP Rocky and Ab-Soul make appearances on ‘Kush Coma’ and ‘Way Up Here’, respectively. All in all OLD is a testament to how well Danny handles the most eclectic array of beats I’ve heard on an album. Lyrically and creatively OLD has managed to become one of the best hip hop albums of the year.

Anamanaguchi | IHEARTCOMIX | Check Yo Ponytail | Photos

This past Tuesday I had the opportunity to catch a sold out Anamanaguchi at the Echoplex in LA as a part of the IHEARTCOMIX “Check Yo Ponytail 2” series. The 700 person capacity venue was full but surprisingly spacious as we walked in on Chrome Sparks. One of the very first things I noticed was the diverse crowd; it couldn’t have seemed more eclectic, but everyone was on the same page in anticipating an off-the-wall night. After Chrome Sparks finished up his bass heavy DJ set, Juiceboxxx took the stage and played their own style of indie rap. The crowd was all over it.

Another beer and bathroom break later and Anamanaguchi was preparing to come on and it seemed like everyone in the place rushed to the stage. The lights went out, the screen lit up and then ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ started pumping through the speakers and the crowd’s anticipation came to a head. The band ran out on stage and jumped immediately into ‘Meow’ a crowd favorite. Within seconds what seemed like the entire sea of people began jumping, moshing, crowd surfing or stage diving. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen a crowd go that nuts!

Anamanaguchi – Prom Night
[audio:https://controlaltdelight.com/Music/Anamanaguchi/Prom%20Night.mp3]

Anamanaguchi continued to power through their set with songs from both their debut Dawn Metropolis and their awesome new LP Endless Fantasy. The relentless assault of a hacked Super Nintendo joined by two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer managed to keep the crowd engaged throughout the entire set. The new lights and awesome projector cubes along with the 8 bit visuals really tied together this unique concert experience. For one of their last songs the band invited Bianca Raquel on stage to handle vocal duties on ‘Prom Night’, a personal favorite and one of the band’s songs that I envision as a possible crossover hit. Almost immediately after beginning the song it seemed as though everyone in the audience was singing along with her.

After the first chorus ended I asked my neighbors to boost me up and soon enough I was crowd surfing over a cluster of terrified looking Asian girls. That was basically the cherry on top of an awesome night spent at the Echoplex with a band that lived up to the hype and then some.

CoachellAltDelight brings attention to special artists that will be featured in Indio come April.
Some we love. Some we just discovered. All essential.

2/9 Days

The Wombats are an indie pop rock trio out of Liverpool. They took the music industry by storm when their 2007 debut album The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation went platinum. Since then they have released a few EPs and returned with their sophomore album, The Wombats Proudly Present: Modern Glitch in 2010. The energy and catchiness of their tunes cannot be understated in a live setting. If you’re all stoked on seeing Two Door Cinema Club and want to catch an artist that’s a little bit similar, you should be sure to check them out. Despite a lack of new material, they’re definitely an act that has all the artillery to put on one of the more memorable sets of the weekend.

Mmoths

Upon firing up Mmoths’ new EP Diaries, I was drawn into the lush reverbed, soundscape that has become distinct to his sound. Mmoths is the stage name of 19-year-old Irish producer Jack Colleran, and Diaries is the follow up to his eponymous debut. He creates indie-tronic music that brings about a certain melancholic happiness to it. I know; quite a contradiction. This is chill out and dream music. Mmoths sonically renders an incredible and haunting atmosphere throughout. The inclusion of vocals on two of the EP’s 6 tracks brings it all together. The first single off of Diaries features Holly Miranda (of the Jealous Girlfriends). She compliments the distorted synths and ambient sounds Mmoths creates perfectly. This effort showcases Mmoths continuing ability to develop an already signature sound and grow as an artist.
